That's 2 pounds a week. You need to reduce your calories by 1000 per day. Eat 1000 calories less a day, or exercise 1000 calories more. Or some combination.

I lost 30 pounds this year and I feel great - I lost about 8-10 lbs per month.

Go through your cupboards/fridge and get rid of crap food.
No sugar - no pop - no juice.
No white bread - ancient grains is ok.
No pasta.
3 meals per day - 1600 to 1800 calories.
No eating after 7 pm - drink lots of fluids.

You will be hungry for the first 3-4 weeks until your body gets used to it.

It's hard, it's uncomfortable and many times you will want to cheat - but the results are worth it.

ps - lifting weights is important - 30 minutes 3 x a week. Make sure you do squats.

you can eat the same amount, just spread it out to 5 meals instead of 3 and walk more.

Some other tips:
1. Take the stairs where you can and avoid the elevator
2. Drink water instead of pop or artificial juices
3. If you drink coffee, cut the sugar intake in half and switch to milk
4. Be more active around the office and not just park your butt on the chair the whole day

As I've said before, and probably will again, I have maintained a weight loss of over 110 pounds (so far! :clap2:) for over a year and a half. Here are the Four Pillars of my success story:

1. Be mindful of EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. I still occasionally eat a fast food hamburger (a small one) if I want one bad enough, not daily because it's faster than cooking.

2) WALK. Don't stroll, travel at a good pace, and be aware of the muscles you're using to do it. Do a Pilates-type stomach contraction; flex and extend your thighs, calves and feet. If you can find a partner (2 legged or 4 legged!) to go with you in an area where you can duck under branches and step over fallen logs or jump across small creeks/streams/ditches, so much the better.

3) Break your Starbucks habit. Stop drinking carbonated soda. Drink water, or green tea, or green iced tea without sugar. Liquid calories add up fast (my old favourite S'bucks daily was consumed 1000 calories at a time....without me noticing.)

4) Eat NATURALLY colourful foods! Bell peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes don't need a gallon of dressing and feta cheese, just crumble a little herbed goat cheese in it, drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil over it, and maybe have a little greek yogurt tzatsiki on the side!

(And every once in a while, give yourself permission to eat whatever the hell you feel like eating with no guilt or shame or embarassment...JUST DON'T EAT IT ALL!

Much affection,
Ms Erica

mostly agree
The big cut was sugar, I was using 3 teaspoons on my cereal and a teaspoon for each cup of coffee - - - added up to 9 - 11 teaspoons a day. Since I cut the sugar I've lost 20 pounds over 3 months and got myself out of the pre-diabetic diagnoses. I do 45 - 60 minutes a day on the bike and treadmill, first thing each day. However, that didn't seem to have much effect on my blood sugar levels. Cutting sugar took me from over 7 and sometimes over 8 in the morning to under 6 and sometimes near 5 in the morning.

Totally agree with all these points, but strongly disagree with the poster that suggested you have to endure hungry the first 3-4 weeks to get 'used' to it. Not good for your metabolism at all. By all means cut some calories, but keep yourself fueled. You should always combine a fitness regimen with any attempt to lose weight, and getting fit requires fuel. Even at night, after 7 p.m., whatever, it is not good to 'fast'. The body burns a lot of calories as you sleep. Eat right, but eat. Just my 2 cents.

Eat more nutrient dense food and cut out food that is not nutrient dense.

For example:
1) choose brown rice over white rice
2) choose baked potatoes over french fries
3) choose fish over red meat
4) choose vegetables and beans and nuts over fish or red meat
5) choose organic vegetables over non-organic vegetables

Choosing nutrient dense foods keeps you full longer thereby reducing calorie intake. If you focus on lower calorie intake, you'll die of hunger and give up.

If you focus on foods that make you feel full by choosing nutrient dense foods, you'll be satiated, your taste buds will change and you won't have to deny yourself french fries because you won't want to eat them, and you'll feel healthy and lose weight and keep it off.

Also, numbers on a scale don't always tell the true story. I originally had lost 45lbs but have gained back about 15-20lbs in muscle and I'm smaller than I was at the lowest weight.

Nutrient dense food (avoid processed if you can) and regular weight lifting with a moderate interval cardio plan will do wonders. Bodybuilding.com has a lot of informative blog posts and meal/workout plans to follow for guidance.

The method you choose for your weight loss does depend on your goal. If you want to lose 10 pounds quickly for an event, and it's not part of an overall desire to live a healthier lifestyle and have more permanent success, here's my thoughts:

1) Do a raw fruit/juice/smoothie routine for your time frame. Eat/drink nothing but raw fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies. I have personally lost 10 pounds in one week by this method. http://www.rawreform.com/content/view/282/148/

2) Follow the Dukan diet, which restricts your eating to pretty much one food group, protein, for your first 5-7 days. Eat only meat, eggs, and non-fat dairy products. For fibre, you make an oat-bran pancake each morning. Drink lots of water. Walk for a minimum of 20 minutes each day. The diet gets more interesting after your first week, when you begin to alternate meat-only days with meat-veg days. I have personally lost 10 pounds in one week by this method. http://www.dukandiet.com You can buy the Dukan Diet through Amazon Kindle and start on it right away.

If, however, you want to effect some serious lifestyle changes and go for long-term success, I recommend Weight Watchers, which has the most long-term success of any weight loss program, possibly because of the social aspect, ie. the friendly pressure of weighing yourself every week in a somewhat public arena, combined with the group support format.

Good luck to you!

1600-1800cal/day is only for those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. If your life is active and/or your job is physical you'll need upwards of at least 2900cal.

While making smarter choices is totally true, it simply comes down to: eating less - moving more.

I could not agree more! I lost the first 70 pounds or so on Weight Watchers, and there are several smartphone apps out there that make it virtually idiot-proof. If you don't want to weigh in at meetings, there is a huge online community and website that makes it super easy as well. I made sure to weigh in at a centre at least 3 times a month, and I think I only ever went to 2 meetings, only because they weren't convenient with my schedule.

When I was pregnant, I had something called hyperemesis gravidarum for 4 months....which is basically another way of saying 24/7 vomiting. I had to get IVs for dehydration several times and carried an ice cream bucket with me because I could go off at any time like a loaded spring, and did. I had housemaid's knee from being in front of the toilet.

Anyways, one day, it stopped. I started eating and eating and eating. It was like one of those documentaries that shows the life of someone who's weight has gone up to 500 lbs and they show everything they eat over the course of a day and it's like a carton of eggs and a couple chickens and loaves of bread and etc.etc. Mostly healthy stuff save the bottomless coke slurpee I was continually drinking. At the end of my pregnancy I was 210 lbs and a size 14 instead of my usual 130-145 size 6/8.

I was so fat...like unmistakably fat. Not chubby or plump but really awfully fat. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought.. I had struggled to not be fat, worried about becoming fat, and basically obsessed with the fat on my body parts my whole life. Hiding fat, squishing bits of fat in/up with spandex wire and engineering, smoothing and coaxing fat into hidden pockets of fabric...

Then suddenly (well, many Slurpees and feedbags later) lalalala....fat!!! There was a certain freedom in it. I was corset fat, Kirstie Alley fat and why bother trying to hide what you can't hide anyways? I started going to the gym, after introducing my daughter to the daycare for a week with no gym time at all...just getting her used to it, and starting doing my weight training again. It was awesome, even though initially I got bigger, like a size 16, before my extra muscle mass started burning the extra weight off. Plus I was attachment parenting, which is where you wear your child most hours of the day. This too is weight training.

I could never get below a size 12 though, no matter how much I went to the gym. I kinda thought I looked like a chubby horse, because my muscles were all visible under the plump.

Then in utter and complete frustration I went on a very healthy low carb diet, that also banished all wheat products. All my carbs came from fruits and vegetables and I freaking love meat like a lioness, so it was easy. Learned to bake with protein powder. Ate 2500 calories a day at least...

Within 3 months, I was a size 8. Now I'm a 6 and I need new pants.

This sounds like an infomercial, but it's totally true.

Anyhow....switch the wine for vodka/gin and tonic/diet Sprite and hang on....also good to have a cheat meal with carbs about once every 2 weeks.

seriously. if you do not want to do a lot of work and need to lose the weight fast try Dr. Bernstein diet clinic. You might even lose more than ten pounds if you stick to their super strict diet and supplement regimen for 4 weeks. It's not cheap though. But it works, gee golly does it work.
