Official Icon of Eye Gouging

You can sign up for a free trial class any time - it's in North Van, but I'm thinking it'll be worth the trip.

I said to the guy, "Yeah, I just want to learn to gouge some eyes", and he just said, "Oh yeah - you just want to get right to it".

So I'm thinking that you pretty much start with the eye gouging as soon as you get in the door.

"So...I'd like to welcome the newcomers here today OW! MY EYE! AUGGGH! SONOFABITCH!

Interesting, looks like "real" self defense which quite frankly is not for the squemish....

A whole lot of self defense or response in any emergency situation is training and practice, for me it always helps to visualize what I would do if "X" happened..

One other thing about any self defense technique, they can't be used half heartedly... Once you decide to fight back it has to be 150% ... but then staying alive can be one hell of a motivating factor..

Good luck OB (yep probably a good thing for ladies in this job to know) oh and of course you are always way better off avoiding the need for self defense with common sense :)

There's purse size too...~;) for bad doggys
Those purse size sprayers are a prohibited weapon, ie if you get caught with it you are in serious trouble and face weapons charges. Note the word prohibited, you can't possess them for any reason or even get a permit. Several years ago the law was changed and now the all bear spray must be in a container of at least 224 grams and be labled for use on animals only.

Avoiding a situation; or simply leaving will always be the best choices - however this is for times when those options are not possible.

I was particularily impressed that they address ground fighting - almost all fights go there, and that's where it will end for the loser.

You can know all the kicks, blocks, and upright-oriented punches in the world, and they'll be useless once you're on the ground with a larger person on top. So I want to know what will allow me to disable someone from that position so I can escape. That's where a lot of the so-called dirty techniques come into play.

Given the probable height and weight differences, the fight is already dirty by definition, and you have to be able react with enough force to save your life.

If that force proves lethal to the other party, so be it. In a choice between me and them, it will ALWAYS be them. I think this mindset is as important if not more so than actual technique.

Yep correct, common sense will save you where force never will, but if ya gotta fight then ya gotta fight to win .. losing is a bad option and the trick is to fight to get away, like the old saying goes "he (or she) who fights and runs away lives to fight another day"...

Sort of a goofy line but in the Karate Kid when the kid is about to enter his first match he asks the old guy how do I score points and the reply is I don't know I never fought for points only for my life ...

Be careful

You had better get new glasses with GLASS in them. NOT the horn rims you had last week.

Personally, I think I'd want a bear! That'll keep the weirdos in line!

"This is not Gentle Ben, pal...this is actually his degenerate grizzley twin "Kick-Your-Ass" Ben. You may want to step AWAY from the bear. Thank you, and have a nice day".

Missed the free trial class tonight - but I'll set it up again for next Monday...is anyone interested in going with me?

Yow! Cool - it's in North Van, from 7 to 8 pm, and I was thinking Monday the 22nd. We can cab it, or, I've figured out the bus - mind you looks like we'll still have to walk a few blocks.

But then again, I guess we better start gettin' tough!

Proper self-defence should be pre-emptive rather than rely on reflex to block attacks.

here's something I would like to share with those interested. Most martial arts I know tend to have sets of move that are each specifically design for defence specific attack, in a real situation, you won't have time to think about how your opponent is going to attack. And unless you're real expert in that discipline, 90% of the time you won't be able to come up with the proper move for sudden attacks..

to make it simpler to understand, instead of trying to block one's fist or forearm, go straight to control the person's shoulder. I don't care how the punch (round house or straight) is comming, if you can hit his shoulder, the force of the punch will be diluted significantly, simply because the shoulder is the origin of the punch. (you'd probably ask how, hard for me to explain here)

Other reason to control the shoulder of the attacker is simply because it is much easier to catch that a fist.

Another practical tip: in confrontation, try to maintain 3 feet space between yourselves and the other (make sure he/she has to step forward to be able to attack you), eyes to eyes but keep sight on the foot position of your opponent, when he/she tried to step forward to attack, kick hard on that lower leg, just above ankle. Preferrably on the side of the shin for maximum result.
