How Prepared Are You For A Disaster?

Well, a few weeks ago I got my hands on one of those US Army dinners they wrap up in, and may I add long term, non biodegradable plastic that would probably last for centeries in the dump. The dinner I tried was a cheese tortellini and I had to force myself to finish it. The only way I would willing eat this stuff is if it was really an emergency and it was all the only food around. I don't know what the other meals are like.

There are 3 (generally accepted) only 2 (personal experience) decent meals in each box of 12 MREs.

They don't last forever. FEMA (demonstrating their normal high level of competence) managed to demonstrate that with some 18 million of them or 70 million dollars worth.

OK, I tried the US Army macarroni and cheese dinner or was it cheese, and it was really bad. Which one are the good ones to stock up on anyways?

I also bought one of those hand crank flashlights that can change from regular lighting to LED mode which last up to nine hours. Not the brightest but with hand cranking you have an endless light source.

Next item other than the Army food is a radio of some sort. Any recomendations, should I just get a regular one or get something with short wave capabilities. And what advantage do short wave radios have over regular ones?

Avian Bird Flu is what freaks me out...

If and when it mutates and becomes a pandemic (statistically we are overdue for major pandemic btw) sh-t will hit the fan in so many nasty ways...

Need to work on firearms protection, got permit, need to buy one and go to shooting range. Shottie and Glock should do nicely. My kick boxing skills ain't gonna be worth sh-t if I got a gang of people rushing my house... the old sound of shotgun being loaded may help persuade them to piss off though !

Beefsteak with Mushroom Gravy
Pot Roast with Vegetables

eatable Beef Stew
uneatable anything with Chicken or Pasta in it. The Chicken is little cubes of something like a cigarette filter. The Pasta is like eating a rubber tube.

None deadly items to defend oneself in an disaster situation

Any body have any suggestions for a none deadly item for self defence, and preferably something that will not cause any pain as well. Is mace safe? Is it environmentally friendly? Will my air rifle be enough? I remember seeing some sling shots for sale at 3vets. Any body know if you can get rubber shots for them and how hard is it to learn us use a sling shot?

Get some bear spray. It will not kill anyone but will seriously disable most people.

Because I live in the sticks were used to surviving without city water, sewage, power, etc. Got a well with a hand pump backup, four fireplaces with a shed full of wood, lots of tinned goods and a generator. During the snow storm of 1996 we were stuck without power for over a week and it was one of the best times I've had during the winter here.

Friend bought a small hand spray for me and yup, spray works. How do I know? Accidently got some my face. Spent 20 minutes in the bathroom rinsing my eyes out. And yes, I was playing with it because I was curious.
