I've been thinking about various things in the news and my reactions to them, and how they change over the years. I'm reminded of the saying, "if your young and not a liberal, you have no heart. If you're old and not a conservative, you have no brain." Is it inevitable people get more set in their ways (and perhaps less tolerant) as they get older, or do you think one mellows with age?

yup i think some people get more lenient and accepting as they get older...like my parents for example, or my aunts and uncles who once were against certain things, but now they fully accept it like inter racial marriage.

This is a really interesting poll. I could actually vote for all 3 equally. I am who I have always been. I have learned to accept things in certain circumstances. Today's drivers just drive me crazy. One of my favorite things that I say while driving if "If you're not going to drive, then just park that fukin thing for christ sake" Nothing drives me more wild than someone who seems to have no place to be or go and just drags there feet on the way to there destination. Get off the road and put down your damn phone.

I don't sweat about the small shit anymore.
Big problems deserve my full attention ..... Peoples opinions who I hardly know, or using a cup with a broken handle, when company is over, hauling livestock in traffic, the fact you've been fighting with Uncle Ned for a month, and feel it necessary to fill me in on the very one sided details ... get filed under DRGAS.

( don't really give a shit )

Less is more, like in everything. Smaller house is better= less to heat and cool and maintain.

Material things the same, 1 car and 1 2 wheel toy is plenty. Completely lost interest in nice expensive cars after seeing how hard it is to make money after losing my corporation job which was vastly overpaid. I only buy used vehicles now.

In fact I can't name one thing I need to buy right now outside of food, and clothes. Clothes from JCpenny not that LV, Gucci stuff for I just can't understand. Not even at half price would I go near it.

I'd say working in the technology sector has made me a lot more tolerant than when I was much younger.

Early 1990's I had a few clients who were transgendered, knowing them pre and post Op made me know them more as a person. Still the same person and being professional with everyone made me see past their appearance.

Technology attracts a lot of very intelligent people, many of whom are from different cultures with an excellent CV to go along with it. I think with the exception of Antarctica, I have dealt with clients from literally around the world.

So count me in as more tolerant.

When I was young and stupid I voted Liberal (Federal elections) up until the Adminstation Scandal when the Chretien government STOLE 250 million of tax payers money to give to Lieberal cronies as kickbacks.Since then I jumped the fence and as far as I am concearned you could take a monkey and strategically shave it....dress that monkey up in a new suit with a blue tie and call it a Conservative and I would vote for it.....even moreso right now with regards to the brainless idiot Trudeau......fuck dress up a cucumber with a blue tie and call it a Conservative and I would vote for it because it would be better than an idiot who is running this country into the ground and racking up debt whilst continuing to live the life of a trust fund baby who has never done a hard day of work in his life.

So your more tolerant when you see a shaved monkey, with a cucumber in its hand?
On second thought, with the mental image that creates.....you don't need to provide an answer.

I'm more compassionate for those less fortunate than me than when I was in my twenties. Probably because I've reached financial security and I dont really have any expensive vices. I partake in this hobby rarely now, just seeing Katerina a couple times a month. I'm neither left nor right leaning politically, I can appreciate both sides argument I believe we need a social safety net to look after our poorest citizens and capitolism is fine as long as the ideology doesn't swing too far to the right. Left wing, right wing? Both attached to the same crooked bird. In my opinion neither is out to serve the little guy.whether they serve their 1% corporate master or their union overloards, both sides are as crooked as a dogs hind leg.
I know I can't help everyone that's down on their luck but I hope those that I've helped appreciated it enough to pay it forward.
My siblings and I grew up poor, lots of hand me downs, no organised sports, ate a lot of wheat puffs and sugar water for breakfast. I remember my parents not eating at all some dinners, just drinking coffee while us kids ate. It wasn't always the best food but we did eat.
Having grown up that way I guess it gave me some empathy towards the homeless situation that many find themselves in today. I always carry spare change with me when I'm downtown and I'll usually order an extra large pizza and what's left I'll pass it out to the homeless down on Pandora street here in Victoria.
At work we collect food for the food bank and we have shop bbqs once a month and whatever money is leftover we donate to the local food bank. I don't say this stuff to pat myself on the back but I hope it sets an example that it's really not that hard nor costs much money to hopefully make a small difference in your neighbourhood.

I've become more conservative; unfashionably so, in fact. My views have changed entirely, which I attribute largely to having lost the idealism of youth. In my heart I feel like it's the left who has changed, having abandoned common sense entirely, but I also often speculate if it is rather a byproduct of aging. It's impossible to be objective :(

I grew up in a shithole and had to claw my way out. Now that I am comfortable I have no patience with those sitting on sidewalks with their hands out expecting everyone to feel sorry for them. And I really have no patience with their do-gooder enablers who contribute to the problem by making excuses for them.

Tolerant- yes and no
I'm not tolerant of the ones expecting handouts, as I get older I can see a people who need help, the poor, weak, hungry, the sick. Our society should be taking care of these people but they are falling through the cracks in the social system.
Its not easy to change as you get older, as you get set in your ways.

Over the past years I known business men who, if you were going to dip into their profits, you could see how mad, angry and bitter they could become.

Kind of frightening on how much people depend on money for their wellbeing. Ever see an old person that does not have any money, you can see the sadness in their eyes...

My parents were proud that their kids crawled out of poverty but they always emphasized us living a frugal life style. I guess I adopted that phylosophy, i buy my jeans from Costco, and my shirts from Walmart, however I am a sucker for nice stereo equipment but you can find high end older analog equiptment on line and sometimes fairly inexpensive.
I was always raised to pay cash or just don't buy it until you've saved up enough money for luxuries like a vehicle or a vacation and I'll put that stuff on my credit card and pay the balance off withing two weeks. Just to collect the card rewards.
Best advice my folks gave me is live financially like you're not getting paid next week.

people should qualify what they are saying with their age along with it,

some one recently thought turning fifty was old. and I just looked at him and laughed,
my nephew felt 45 was old, again, I ordered a jack Daniel's and laughed at him

mid sixties still young compared to some but think I would range in the upper two percent of old people on this site.

the older I get the more stupid I realize everything is,
I mean everything is just so fucking stupid,

its out there I have said, other philosopher's and great thinkers have said it,
the only truth is that we know nothing.

and as I get older and have time to ponder,
I feel like I should just shut up, because im spewing forth, nothing but shit and stupidity

yeah as we get older at least I do,
I realize just how foolish it all is, and how little one really understands,
