I notice I have some really old VHS home movies and classic french movies I want to dud into DVD for longer storage.

How do I transfer this to a DVD.

Using a computer or DVD recorder with a hard drive like this:

I been told that this Macrovision will prevent me from doing this ? How do I defeat this keeping in mind all movies I am transferring are my own personal home made movies and some classic old french VHS tape I like to back up for longer storage. ( dont know if this is true but macrovision on the dvd player will prevent me from dubbing even though is my own movies)

Any opinion appreciated

Thanks

Buy a Lite-On DVD recorder from Costco for $150 plus tax, and connect your VHS deck's output to the DVD recorder's input. It's that simple.

The results are as good if not better than your original VHS tapes.

You can also connect video cameras, and direct Cable TV sources in the same manner.

The rest is easy.

If they're your own home made movies there is no need to worry about macrovision. Easiest way to do this is just bring the friggen tapes somewhere and get them to do it. Second easiest way is to buy a VCR/DVD machine that will transfer your VHS tapes to DVD from the press of a button.

3rd easiest way is to hook your VCR up to your camcorder and either pass the video right through or record it to your Digital Camcorder first and then via Firewire transfer it to the PC then burn off a DVD.

4th and the most fukkin hassle is go buy a video capture card or external box. Hook the VCR up to it, set all your capture resolution and be sure to de-interlace the video, then make a DVD of it.

Ah yes... the fucking capture card, as Hitrack states so colorfully. Been there, done that. What a painful experience that is. You need a doctorate in stupidity to go that route. It works alright, but after going through the whole setup, and finally getting right, I pulled the card, and waited for the prices to come down on the Asian recorder - and boy, do they work swell. Fortunately, the used Winnov professional studio grade card I bought on Ebay only cost me $35.

As for getting a shop to do it, the cheapest I found was $35/hour of recorded data, plus $5 for the disk. Not worth it if you plan to do a lot of transferring, but foolproof as Hitrack suggests. One or two off now and again is OK, but I like to get my hands dirty, so...

Well folks, this is my last post (1500), so goodnight and may your God bless you in his own way, and keep you safe every single day!

I agree only go this rout if you have one or two tapes and it's really not worth inversting time or money in the DIY route.

i've been thinking of transferring some old tapes too, but am gonna wait to see if there's anything cheaper than the $129 Cyberhome or the $169 LiteOn DVD recorders both from WalMart. yeah, i don't know why i'm penny pinching here. but both appear to be decent buys and both are made for VHS and camcorder transfers.
