My experience with Hotmail is endless spam and other problems. I've never used Gmail but my understanding is that it's much bettter. Gmail also gives you 1 Gig of memory which is useful. I want a Gmail account, can anybody send me an acknowledgement? [this isn't the proper word but I've been drinking]

I would use gmail, since it's newer there's a better chance your name your wanting to use won't be taken, tons of storage, and plenty of cool ways to intergrate it with windows/firefox.

Gmail is better. Hotmail is slow and as mentioned above-endless spam. If you want a gmail acct, PM me an email account and I will send you an invitation. I think that this is still the way to get an acct, though I am not sure.

I have a gmail account and don't find it any better or worse than any of the other free accounts, but I believe issues regarding gmail's privacy are still a concern. I have no major issue with google's email scanning (for that particular address), but can see how it would feel invasive if I were using a gmail address for anything that I might consider more private in nature.

I had the same concerns. Looking into it I found that all the big web based email providers do the same stuff and it is not such a big deal. Nobody is looking at your mail with much interest. If you want to be really secure I would recommend staying off the web completely and while you are at it throw away your mobile phone.

As an email admin..

go with gmail..the spam filtering is wonderful, and the service first rate.

but remember..email is *never* 100% private..ever. Trust me on this. If privacy you want...email you should not use.

PS if anyone needs a gmail invite..let me know..

I wouldn't touch hotmail.com......

Its really useless......

All I like about hotmail is MSN messenger.......

they give you less space and they want you to buy their space by being a special member.....

and plus, you get junk emails from spammers...... (a lot)

Use Yahoo mail is way better.. They give you 100 GB.....

I can't seem to find Google mail.........

I agree in regard to Hotmail. Piles of spam and you always have to type in a complete login, which can really be a pain. I had a hotmail account since 1995
but I dont' even bother anymore, it's too much hassel. If this post seems a little excessive, you'll have to excuse me, I've had quite alot to drink. :D

Keeping an account active

I don't know about Gmail's policy in this area but Hotmail requires you log in at least once a month or the account is considered lapsed and all info therein is deleted. You can reactivate the account but none of the information you had prior to lapsing will be there. I have a Yahoo account and I'm not certain how long their period is before they consider the account lapsed but it is longer than a month. I'm thinking maybe three months?

With gmail you need an invitation. Someone who has a gmail acct. can send you one. If you need one, pm me a working email address and I will send you one.

If anonymity and security is a concern, use Hushmail.

I agree hushmail is a good option. I've used it for years, and have yet to receive any spam - and I haven't bothered setting any spam filters! Also good for a little more anonymity, although nothing is completely anonymous on the web. Only downside to hushmail that I found is that I find it a bit slow to load at times and it doesn't seem to handle imbedded images very well (or at least not that I've been able to manage). But if your primary interest is keeping spam-free, you might want to give it a try.

Thanks for the info people. Looks like Hotmail and Gmail may not be the best option. I guess I'll do a little research on Hushmail.

Questions about Google Mail:
- does it have a Sent Mail folder? I want to keep copies of my outgoing mail in the event I need to follow-up with someone, or as proof that I stated something that bites me in the arse (especially when communicating with women). And yet some free email services seem to regard this as unnecessary.
- is it compatible with Outlook?

It has a sent folder. And drafts folder. Also has an email search. It will automatically organize emails to and from the same addy together by default. So if I email you back and forth about some issue, over a period of several months, it would keep all those reply emails together in chronological order.

It has mail forwarding and POP to make it compatible with Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Mail etc.

PM me an email account (set up a quick temp. addy on Hotmail) and I can send you an invite if you'd like to try it.
