Horgan's plan to re-open BC

Before their website went down, the Black Orchid agency in Nanaimo said they'd re-open when salons opened up. Maybe I'm just pessimistic, but that seems to me a rather arbitrary guideline to pick, and if BC's plan included escort agencies it would place them months later. It'll probably take weeks after they re-open before the ladies working there stop being nervous and cutting services they allow during sessions. My fear is that DFK will become the new BBFS, in that all the escorts worth seeing won't even consider it.
Awwww.........

Selling sex is legal in Canada...

love susie
It's a technicality but that's all the law is. Both buyer and seller are committing a criminal offence. Harper helped sell the lie about not targeting workers by making the seller "immune to prosecution" but not "immune to the law".

286.2 (1) Everyone who receives a financial or other material benefit, knowing that it is obtained by or derived directly or indirectly from the commission of an offence under subsection 286.1(1), is guilty of an indictable offence ...

This law does not apply to selected third parties but sellers were only given immunity from prosecution. The criminalization still applies. Fortunately the police either don't realize this or they have chosen not to enforce such an ignorant law.

Sorry treveller, I think I'll go with susi on this one as she actively is involved with advocacy and the police liason. I believe the law you cite applies to third parties (ie pimps, operators of bawdy houses, boyfriends, husbands) not sex workers.

The legality of sex work has already been determined by the courts, but it is still muddied by surrounding laws that criminalize the purchaser, third parties and public advertising, but susi has made it clear that VPD and other police forces are not interested in arresting purchasers as long as they aren't purchasing the services of minors or trafficked sex workers. Please feel free to correct me susi and thanks for all you do!

BC has an election next year, and if the economy tanks, how will the Green/NDP coalition fend off the Neo-Liberal party?

At least for the moment the plan of caution seems to be polling well, so Horgan appears safe.

Seriously? Horgan holds a razor thin minority govt that formed as a protest vote via the greens. Horgan does not have a mandate to govern by the voters, and a lot of green voters that just wanted to send a message to the libs are now going wtf? Oh woopsie, didn’t see that coming, and will diss the greens for being ndp whores.

That said, it is now Horgan’s to lose, but I wouldn’t call him safe at all.

But his pandemic popularity is soaring! He is the third most popular premiere in Canada with a bullet as BC crushes the curve! Wilkinson, like Scheer, is stumbling to be revelant

CBC article.

The highlights:

Gatherings of 2-6 people permitted in time for long weekend.

Retail stores, hair salons, child care, restaurants, libraries and museums could reopen soon.

Provincial parks expected to open for day use on May 14.

Overnight camping could be allowed in June.

Hotels, movie theatres and the film industry might reopen in the summer.

Schools expected to be open for classes in September.

All reopenings will depend on detailed plans to avoid transmission of COVID-19.

Nightclubs, bars and casinos will not reopen anytime soon.
The ban on gatherings of more than 50 people remains in place.
All these places re opening, yet gyms won't be...where distancing and constant cleaning IS very possible. So fucking stupid...

"I believe the law you cite [286.2 (1)] applies to third parties"
Nothing in the Criminal Code limits the application of this section in any way and sex workers were given immunity from prosecution, nothing more, by a separate section.

"susi has made it clear that VPD and other police forces are not interested in arresting purchasers as long as they aren't purchasing the services of minors or trafficked sex workers."

Other police forces, Ottawa and the Maritimes come to mind, have made numerous arrests of purchasers on the street in response to complaints of visible sex work. Underage or trfficking was not an issue in these arrests.

Harper probably applied section 286.2(1) to sellers to accommodate his social conservative base and make a legal challenge more difficult. One of the arguments used to strike down the earlier provisions was that selling services was legal and the government could not make a legal activity more dangerous. Selling services is no longer a legal activity.
