Concerning the Anti-Idling Bylaw in Edmonton.

Please for the love of GOD, tell me what i'm doing wrong here! I've only had a car about a month, and ZERO experience during the cold winters we feel here in edmonton, but seriously...what am I doing wrong when I start my car, idle it for 10-30 seconds and then start driving???? MY really, with the heat on full blast, the defroster cranked up and the A/C turned on(I heard this one in science class thank you) my windows do NOT FROST UP!!! This is in minus 25 degree weather!

My car is plugged in every night, so the block heater is working. But I'm seriously not sitting in my car for 5 minutes waiting for it warm up. I always leave home dressed like I have to walk to my destination, meaning HEAVY Gloves, Warm insulated Toque and a heavy winter jacket. The car still takes about 5 minutes to get warmed up enough to lose the gloves, but by then I'm already driving and...my windows do not frost up! So please, tell me what I've done wrong and why this Anti-idling thing is such a bad idea? Plus zero degree weather...it makes sense not to idle your damned SUV. But even below freezing...does it really need to be warm enough to keep your coffee warm all day?

P.S. I'm banned from being published in the edmonton Sun on account of knowing the editors on a first name basis:rolleyes: How unfair it is.

I would like to know what they expect single moms with new born babies or sick children are supposed to do?
They are supposed to leave them in the house all alone for how long to warm up their vehicles so that it isnt too cold for their babies....but at what cost at leaving them inside the house by themselves.??????

This is just one example......

This is a stupid law, as far as I am concerned.

I think that the idea of it works, in certain situations, but past a certain temp, I'm pretty positive that it wouldn't be applicable. People working for the city like to not freeze their nads off too.

If we look at situations where a douchebag runs into the bank, or Timmies (with a line even!) in say, mid-spring weather, above freezing, then yeah, fine the moron. Obviously if they have that much money to run their car for so long while not being in it, they can afford an idling fine.

Colder than -15, I think that you should be allowed to run your car through a cycle with a remote started, approx 15 mins. I know lately, if i make my lil gal go before she's warmed up, she's all grumpy at me.....

Exactly...where it is deemed unreasonable. I can see below freezing as possibly a reason why it would not be acceptable but even still I'm able to start my car, drive it safely without the windows frosting up, all in minus 25 degree weather. April does make a point about small children and sick. But what about healthy kids, well dressed and at an appropriate age? Can't they survive being in a cool car? Or the guy with his light jacket and jeans with no toque or mitts on...seriously, what you thinking man...And this is a good case too. I had found an individual whose car had broken down this week, minus 20 something not including a wind chill factor wearing a light sweater, no mitts, no toque on teh side of the road. Wait time for a Tow Truck...over 3 hours. What is he doing...standing around trying to stay warm.

Laws are apprently made because common sense has left albertans...and saving the stupid from extinction is a noble cause.

I'm not a big fan of the law either. But I only let my truck idle for less then a minute, and its usually warm in 5-10, so i can take off my hat:eek:

And just a side note, you only need to have your car plugged in for 1-2hrs
get a timer for your plug like the one for x-mas lights. you'll save a shit load of money.
those block heaters use a lot of juice:rolleyes:
