How did you find out she was infected? Did you get it or did she inform you? Are you having an outbreak?

Hi punky pooner

I would also ask the same questions that thrillseeker1 did.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a very common infection with the majority of Canadians having it. Most people who get HSV do not get symptoms (an outbreak), so it can be difficult to know if you have it. It is a lifelong infection that is more of an annoying skin condition for most people. Treatment is available to reduce symptoms and transmission but is not required.

It sounds like you are worried that HSV could have passed to you. The best way to test for HSV is when someone is having symptoms; this typically shows up as small clear fluid filled blisters or sores. When this happens we can test the sore with a swab and tell people what type it is. If someone was to get symptoms these would show up around 6 days on average but this could range from 2-20 days.

Most people do not get symptoms to HSV which means the only option is a blood test. There are two different types of blood test that are available and these are not included when people come for a general STI screening test. These blood tests do not always give you a clear picture as it will not tell you where the HSV is on your body and it can take 4 months for these tests to show a positive result.

Two types of HSV blood tests.
(1) At our clinics we offer the HSV IgG test for free which does not tell the difference between type 1 or 2. It shows a positive result if you have one or both of these types.

(2) We also offer the HSV TSS test which is available for free under certain circumstances or you can pay for it at a private lab. This test will tell you if you have type 1, type 2 or both.

punky pooner I would just suggest that you come into one of our clinics for a chat. We could give you information on what options are available for HSV testing and some information.

Here is a link for more information about HSV.

Hi punky pooner

No problem, we certainly respect people’s privacy and I always recommend that people only give what information makes them feel comfortable.
