Hey everyone.

Hope all is well. Just a note that every SP and pooner out there should get a Hep B vaccine. It is a virus that is easily transmitted during sex, but is also very easily preventable by getting the vaccine. It is now a routine vaccine for kids going thru school. Better yet, get the twinrex vaccine and you will be protected from Hepatitis A which you can get from places like Mexico, just from eating seafood etc. No, I don';t have any shares in the company that makes the vaccine, lol. (GlaxoSmithKline)

Be safe, have fun.

Thanks for promoting the hepatitis B vaccine it is one that we highly recommend. We provide it free at any of our clinics and I believe that most public health units throughout BC will also provide it free. Just give them a call before you go in.

Many public health units in BC are listed on our clinic locator:

http://www.stdresource.com/clinics/list.php

You need 3 shots over 6 months; you would have a shot at 0, 1 & 6 months.

In particular situations they would test you for hepatitis B before they vaccinated you or recommend a different vaccination time frame. The doctor or nurse who is providing the vaccine will be able to advice you on your individual situation.

For additional information regarding hepatitis B have a look at the Canadian Liver Foundations web site.

If you had the 3 shots over 6 months and you have a normal functioning immune system there is at present no recommendation for future booster shots.

If your immune system is not working to well e.g. HIV, your doctor may suggest extra shots depending on the results of your blood tests.

If anyone has a personal question that they don’t want to post just send me a PM.

someone was just recently talking to me about this vaccine. They said it also makes you sick for a few days or something... is that true?

Speaking purely as someone who has gotten the vaccine, and from personal experience only, I felt like I had a minor flu for about a week, starting about 4-5 days after each of the shots.

I have heard that this is not uncommon.

Speaking from personal experience....

I felt the fluid burn a little, and then my neck and back were stiff for a couple of days. I can only imagine this is nothing in comparison with having one of the two diseases. The second and third ones were much milder.

I had a little burning in the muscles for a few minutes, maybe an hour on the first shot and nothing on the next two. No sickness, maybe a little heaviness, that was it. That was with the Twinrex. I got it for my travels to the tropics but when I ended up with a broken condom a while ago it was one less thing to worry about. (I did test clean by the way as did the SP). I agree everyone should have it, both A and B.

I found the discomfort to be really minor.. Muscle soreness where the needle went in and that was it for me. A person close to me recently died after a long and painful struggle with liver failure and complications due to hep.. he was still first on the transplant list when he died. :(

Considering how simple it is to get AND that it`s also free... Anyone participating in this hobby/lifestyle should be on top of this...
I`d take flu-like symptoms from the shot over hep/liver failure any day..

This is a no-brainer ppl.. ;)

Health Nurse,

I got my shots (3 of them over a year I believe) 11 years ago.

Do I need a booster shot? I recall that time, they said the Hep B Vaccine is good for 10 -12 years and then you might need a booster.

Hi greatshark

The current recommendation for Hepatitis B is for 3 shots. At this time a booster is not considered necessary. The vaccine has been available for approximately 18 years and there is evidence that most people have kept their immunity over this period of time. That is why a shot at 10 years is no longer considered necessary for most people. Keep in mind that sometimes recommendations change as we learn more about the vaccines. If we know of any changes in the recommendations we will post it for you.

If your immune system is not working well (e.g. HIV infection) you may need booster shots. You would need to see your doctor about this and they would assess your individual situation.

Back in school they gave me shots for hep a and b and a bunch of other stuff, but it was 2 shots and like 3 years appart.... they just stuck a needle in everybody and I went along with the crowd. I think everyone under 35 who went through the public school system in B.C. got that stuff done but I could be wrong.

Hi JR

You get a few shots in school and it can be hard to remember which ones were given.

In BC they started the universal hepatitis B immunization program for grade 6 students in 1992. They now do the hepatitis vaccines for infants which means if you are under 25 and went to school in BC there is a good chance that you have already been vaccinated for hepatitis B.

BC does not provide vaccination for hepatitis A in the school system. You can visit your family doctor or a travel clinic if you need this one.

If you are unsure about your vaccination history and don’t have a written record it is possible to test you blood to see if you may have been vaccinated. You can discuss this with us if you come to one of our clinics.
