I understand the vaccination for Hepatitis A & B may be taken together
in 3 shots at 1, 2, & 6 months. Is any protection provided after just the
first or second shot?

Hard to say. Some people respond briskly to the first shot, others don't respond at all even after 3 shots and may require a 4th. Also, the antibody levels may persist indefinitely, or only for a few months or a year. The only way to know is to check antibody titres after the first or second shot, but there is little data to know the effect of these early antibodies on long term protection.

The 3 shots are recommended as they usually get > 95% of people immune.
