Hey Tianna,

Having fun in Mexico? Why are you posting? You should be on a beach!

If your going to have a burger, no veggie burger is a decent substitute for a hand made beef patty. When I make them, they are roughly 5/8's thick, with top quality ground beef, seasonings, onions, garlic, and of course, alittle BBQ sauce just to spice it up. I even use part of an egg, I find it adds flavour and assists in helping the patty not crumble. Melted cheese is a given, with your well-aged cheddar, or, mozzarella cheese with jalapeños on top!

Now if that doesn't make you hungry then.... :)

For fast food, I think that white spot makes the best burger....:)

Dear Tianna,

I became a vegetarian in 1997 and soon after joined the ranks of an elite vegan commando unit .... our mission was to locate a delicious veggie burger that would satisfy veggie-lovers and carnivores alike. We were not successful :( but times (and food) have changed a lot in a decade. I'm still working on the recipe for a perfect post-sex smoothie ....

I've eaten my fair share of excellent meat as well as veggie burgers. You are fortunate, living in a big city, that there are probably many creative restaurants that offer a variety of veggie burgers. You can take two divergent approaches - go for a veggie burger that doesn't even try to taste like meat and just enjoy the new flavours, or try to find the best meat-tasting substitute; the latter requires a chef with creativity and finesse and who knows to combine more than just soy-chunks and portabello mushrooms. Great veggie burgers do exist, but it is difficult to replicate the texture as well as the taste with sufficient justice. Just keep searching .... and remember it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

At home, you must be willing to experiment. It's been 10 years since I've been to Vancouver so I can't make any local recommendations, but I'd suggest you peruse both big-chain supermarkets as well as little granola-style health food stores. One specific piece of advice for you: I've always been disappointed with Yves-brand products - each item ("turkey", "chicken", etc.) tastes just like the next one and there's probably enough sodium in there to cause even a corpse to develop high blood pressure.

Chow down,

VF

Schneiders (sp?) has a line of meatless products that are extremely good.

Rumor is, these things can actually give vegans a scare because they're convinced there's really meat in them.

I believe its called the "Oh Naturel!" product line.

I've tried the imitation chicken nuggets. They're extremely convincing.
Hi Curmudgeon,

Never tried these, but I now will. I haven't seen them in my grocery store, but if they are being stocked in the same place as the other Schneider's items (instead of in the veggie products area) I've probably just walked by them dozens of times without paying attention.

Have to agree with Juggy. I love the White Spot. Great shakes too.

I have had a couple of veggie burgers in my day, and much to my surprise, they were ranged from not bad to pretty good.

Schneider's makes an excellent "chicken" burger.

I found great ones at the Superstore. A lot of different types. "Cheese", "Ice Cream" etc...

Safeway also has a "Veggie Patch" selection. I don't like "Yves".
Soo Nice is the best Soy "Milk" I have had. Same with "Silk".

Supplement your protein intake with Squash, beans and Soy. Hemp is another, but chalky. Add bananas.

Try Vegan sites for recipes, it's not bland that way.

My fave is a Cherry "Cheese "cake.

I don't miss it at all. Well, maybe for the first year or so. I still crave, it's been a looong time.

Make sure you eat a lot to make up for the lack of sustenance that meat provides. You should eat about 6 times a day in smaller portions to stay full. Water and oatmeal are "it" for me. You will feel hungry for a while.

Talk to your doctor to see if you have any anemia or blood disorder first. Iron supplements are a must.

Wean off of fish and milk for the fist year or so. You will probably get sick for 3-6 months while you adjust (dizziness, headaches, tiredness). I did.

There are 4 classes of vegetarians, research and find out what you want to achieve.

Good luck.

From Beef to Buffalo

Ever since my hunting partner dropped his first buffalo and passed it around I havent eaten beef if I have the choice.

A butcher shop around the corner from me brings it in from a farm in Merrit. No injections , no steroids , free range, beautiful meat.

Its leaner than beef , and although the taste is slightly different to that of beef, I find it great for almost any dish I cook that I use to use beef.

Hamburgers on the barbie are fantastic. Minimal shrinkage of the patty, and you dont need to add eggs or crumbs to keep the patty together .

Prime Rib and New Yorkers are excellent ( a quick rub of extra virgin olive oil and herb garlic is all you need.)

Worth a try - oh, and the price works out to about a dollar more per pound.

No I agree that on the BBQ it is 1000% better, I just find that when your making a thicker patty, eggs do help in keeping it together, like bread crumbs, but I don't like to use that because it changes the flavor alittle too much for my tastes (I'm a very picky eater when I make it.)

A good strip loin is always welcome on my BBQ, and I do eat steak 2-3 times a month. I love a good steak, I even (as I am sure most do) have my own secret recipe of seasonings. I don't use BBQ sauce on my steak, its not for me. I use 4 spices and 3 herbs, along with the extra virgin olive oil, and 1 pre-mixed seasoning "blend" that I love.

Paying the extra $4 for better meat is not a problem for me. I look at it like this, do you want a McDonald's steak, or a Mortons steak? I choose the latter.

On a side note, anyone in here try Gothams Steakhouse? I was thinking of trying it soon. It is supposed to be the best steakhouse in BC, all the celebrities eat there.

Veggies are good

All cows should eat veggies....right before we eat them!

For the best burgers in town, you have to try Vera's!

....Buffalo meat is awesome, have to agree.

Hello Tianna, have you tried organic beef? No antibiotics, no growth hormones. They're free to move around. They're feed a 100% organic, vegetarian diet. Give organic a try. Save on Foods sells it and there are other places, such that sell organic foods. It costs more then the regular beef but it is worth it.

Thank you, SheDevil, for the links and for sharing your personal experience. I would advise our colleagues on the forum to read further on the multitude of useful links describing the health (and other) benefits of going veg, or at least more veg than one presently is.

I won't pontificate on this further, as diet (like religion, politics, and intimate relationships) is a highly personal choice influenced by many factors. All I can speak from is my own experience, and since going veg (and predominantly vegan) I'm healthier, look better, feel better, and f**k better too. More energy and better endurance, even with my insane work schedule and limited hours of sleep.

That being said, I truly believe that a vegetarian diet is not ideal for everyone, and indeed there are some whose particular constitution, genetics, and physiological quirks preclude vegetarianism even with the best of intentions and motivations. For me, the transition was seamless but others seem to just deteriorate over time without reaping any benefit. If this applies to anyone reading this post, then I would recommend the advice of other posters like curious yellow, 4ByFish, and Ilovethemall: eat organically-raised and/or free-range meat. Even I've tried bison before, and it is delicious!

Eat well and Be well, PERBites!
