Hi guys (and girls?). Can some one counsel me on how to defrag my computer - it's doing funny sh*t, and this seemed to fix it last time. (I didn't forget how - honest - a pro came in and "did me". No no - not THAT kind of pro ;) Thanks in advance .....................

Assuming it's XP go Start, Administrative tools, Computer management. You should see defrag in the window on the left.

Defragged disk will only slow you down, it won't cause funky sh*t.
I suggest downloading a free virus checker and anti-spy software as that's the cause of most funky sh*t on Wintendo these days.

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

Does not apply to Windows 3.1 & earlier.

I agree that it will probably will not fix the "funky sh*t", but HOW THE HELL did you come to a conclusion that defrag will slow the system?
I think Commander probably meant that disks with large numbers of fragmented files tend to slow down the system during I/O operations.

My typo. I meant a fragmented disk will slow down file access.
A defragmented disk should not slow down the system.

I found the computer for some strange reason will start working much better when you open the front door and boot the fukkin thing out on the street and a bus runs over it.

Atleast that's what this one guy I helped re-install win 98 said to me. :)

Tracks ???

Thanks for the help, dudes! Some one was right - I defragged OK, but it didn't stop my funky sh*t. Any one got a Plan B?

I know, Plan B is per Hitrack's counsel. Guess we ALL get days when we'd like to let a bus do the number on our computer!

BTW, Hitrack - I've been meaning to ask you. Geography of the low track is pretty f*cking obvious (so-to-speak) in this town; but WHERE (or what?) is the mid-track and hi-track?

Plan B: check your machine for the latest viruses and worms (google for anti-virus and download a free one if you don't already have one)

Plan C: Make sure you are up to date via windows update

Plan D: describe in detail the problem

Plan E: offer a flat of beer for someone to come over and fix it.

Plan F: like plan E except you take it into a professional place and they charge you to fix it.

Plan G: You cruise the track. With out gettin into detail. The mid runs from Victoria to McLean, and the hi-track is the Seymour/Richards strip.

You just missed it
For Win98/ME and probably Win95, the best way to defrag using the built in tools is to diable your virtual memory, disconnect the internet and disable the screen saver before running defrag.

At least that is what I find works the best other than trashing the computer.

I forgot to add download some anti-spy software like Ad-Aware

Plan B:

Insert the Windows XP disk. Reboot. When booting it will ask you to hit any key to boot from the cd, hit any key and reformat the computer.

If you don't get a message to boot to cd, reboot again, enter bios, change boot devices so that your computer boots to the cd rom first, then the hdd, and then reboot again.

Beer ......

Wunnerful, wunnerful - thanks MUCH for all your help, guys. I'm thinkin' maybe the easiest plan is the "invite someone over and provide a flat of beer!) ......

Any offers? ;););)
