Heat dome: lack of providers with air conditioning

It's that time of year. I'm seeing media posts about how to stay cool in the heat and more.

I know many older providers refuse to have air conditioning. I used to blame them for being cheap, while this may be partly true. I recently discovered British Columbia allows landlords and strata management to prohibit occupants from installing air conditioning systems. This is just mind-boggling to me.

I can't speak for all buildings in BC, but, our building in New Westminster allows it. Plus, I know others in others highrises that have air conditioners put in. Weird.
That's bizarre how some would not allow ACs since the media and experts promote the safety of staying hydrated and cool.

As for service providers... again, I can't speak for them, but, maybe they don't feel air conditioners are worth the expense for the few weeks of the year that we get this heat dome? Outside the heat dome spell ( which lasts a few weeks... MAYBE ) overall, I find the summer temps here in metro Vancouver more than quite tolerable. Fans alone do just fine imo.

It all depends. If you're in a west facing building in direct sunlight it will get boiling hot. Fans are not enough. I also don't understand how this is legal.

I do in a high rise building high up facing west. Middle gate - Metro town view -- and yes, during the heat dome it's very hot, but, as I said, take away the heat dome, the overall temp in Metro Van summer is fine. I don't need an A/C as temps are much cooler when the heat wave diminishes. Especially at night. Fans, for me works just fine with temps averaging 24 / 25 degrees daytime and gets below 18 @ night. I've never had a problem. Now, if you are a senior(s).....that's a much different story.

This heat wave ( 30 degree + ) won't last more than a couple of weeks -- IF THAT.

It's very common: https://www.timescolonist.com/homes...ws-to-permit-air-conditioning-systems-4690376. One strata owner was fined more than $11K.

The last few years, perhaps 2024 might be the exception, the heat dome period has lengthened. Then there's the wildfire smoke which can last for months and is now the new normal. Meanwhile, the government sends out warnings about the heat. Today I received n emergency alert when I was in Surrey for the heat.

The thing is, some people who have A/C lack empathy and can't imagine what's it like to endure the heat without without A/C.

We also have evidence that fan's don't really do shit when it comes to heat. https://www.newsweek.com/fans-dont-help-heatwaves-1887395

Considering how much an SP charges for just one session, she can more than afford a portable AC in the bedroom. Surely the strata can't fobid that?

They used to call this time of year summer. Now they use terms like heat dome, skyrocketing, scorching, deadly, soaring, never before, etc.
All to create fear and panic in the gullible. I'm guessing most here are too young to know that there was a time we existed without AC, and
yes the temps were the same or hotter. We survived then we'll be fine now as long as we don't get caught up in the panic.

They used to call it Global Warming, but we now know it is a Climate Crisis, and it will only continue to get worse.

Yes, the fear mongering is working. 40 deg. is 40 deg. whether is this year or 50 years ago. Throw some constant OMG into it and magically that 40 deg. seems hotter.
Confirmation bias and selective memories are at play here as well. Both sides appear to be involved.

I recall 50 years ago when we never experienced prolonged heatwaves like we do now, nor did we have as many heat-related deaths. However, comparing temperatures alone is akin to equating a car crash at 100 km/h today with one a century ago. While the speed may be similar, most would prefer to be in a modern car equipped with airbags and seat belts rather than a Ford Model T.

But when 40°C becomes the norm instead of the exception, that’s when we have a problem. And guess what? We’re there. Welcome to the new normal.

Interestingly, despite the clear evidence (reminds me of covid), there are still those who choose to ignore the problem. It’s like standing on the deck of the Titanic and arguing that the iceberg isn’t that big. But the ship is still sinking.

Landlords and stratas in older condos argue that A/C units strain their outdated electrical systems or detract from the building's appearance. If it's just a wiring issue, they could invest in rewiring the building, which is tax-deductible. But it's not. Many are simply drunk on control and power.

From what I've seen in this thread, it's folks with the same mindset (like local government, landlords, and stratas) who don't see the need for air conditioners. They say, "just use a god-damn fan". Similarly, some providers think the same way too.

Is this thread about climate change or SP's air conditioning? If the latter; please don't tell me you have an A/C place if you got there 10 minutes before me and turned it on while I\m on the way up. If the latter; we be hooped.
SP's air conditioning and the lack of legislation/bylaws prohibiting banning of air conditioning units in rentals and strata units.

So many graduates of the school of hard knocks here, who think that science is a bunch of make believe, just because they don't like it's conclusions. Like as if ignorance is some sort of an actual argument. 🙄

There are just as many scientific arguments disproving climate change as there are promoting it. Unfortunately with the amount of online censorship from our governments today, most only hear the propaganda.
