.....of a TV junkie are you? ....and remember if you get an HDTV, you still have to get the signal thru satellite or shaw etc.

As for TV's, Samsung, or Sony are great and I prefer DLP technology over plasma.

Sony has gotten out of Plasma

That's what I've read in the tech journals. Sony is now concentrating on LCD TV. Unfortunately, the largest LCD you can get right now is 40 inch. But you can be sure that will change. If you want a flat panel over 40" you will have to go Plasma which can go over 60 or 70". Be prepared to pay plenty for any Plasma over 40".

If you have patience wait till Boxing day.

If you don't mind size and weight then the Sony flat CRT is the best by far for quality and durability.

for compactness def go for LCD and look for high contrast ratio and brightness specs.

there are 10 HDTV (3 being sports :D ) channels now available at shaw and in my opinion it's finally starting to be "worth it" to upgrade to this technology.

I say go for it.

Hitachi 57" HDTV

I'm really impressed still with my Hitachi, had it for over a year. It's CRT (cathode ray tube) old technology projected onto a large screen, with shaw digital cable.

Everything about the tv is automatic, but it still allows you to do some fine tuning, think it may be time for me to tune it in again, but the picture is so good probably wouldn't bother. Got the set at Sears and then most of my accessories at future shop. Remember dropping over a grand for a power filter, digital video cables and digital sound cable to my stereo.

Shaw has some music channels where the sound is better than my cd player, and the sound on some of the digital shows is awesome also. The speakers in the Hitachi are OK, but if you have a good stereo you'll want the sound through that.

You might want to check the ideal viewing distance for the sets also, I think it was 10 -12 feet for my tv. As the tv is 2 feet thick, you need a reasonable size room.

I remember some of the newer types of tvs could cost a bundle for replacement parts, thought I stick with the old tried and true CRT.

hitachi plasma

I just bought a Hitachi 42" plasma. One of the gimicky features that is really pretty cool is that I can rotate (turn)the TV quite a bit side to side with the remote.

I'd wait another year. The technology is still improving rapidly and the price will continue to fall.

True.
But it's the same situation as we had with computers a few years ago.
No matter what ya buy, six months later there'll be something better and cheaper.
You've just gotta take the plunge - buy something, enjoy it, and try not to see what you can buy in the coming months.

I disagree. This is the age-old line. Sure, there will be something new out next year. But you'll pay thru the fuckin nose for it. The price of a 51" Pioneer Elite plasma dropped from 15G to 6G in just one year. That's because when it was 15G, it was the newest thing. A year later, it still fuckin' rox. But you could have 2 now, with enough $ left over for a week in Mexico.
The technology will continue to improve rapidly, if not exponentially. The prices will continue to fall as the new shit keeps coming out. At some point, you just gotta jump in. There is no right time.
