Is it worth all the hype? Should I be thanking the Catholic Church for the unintended publicity? And is it available in softcover? I'd like to buy a copy before I'm forced to buy one with Tom Hanks' face on the cover.

It's an interesting book but not one I would read a second time. It can be a bit difficult to read at times, since Brown tends to jump around with his writing styles. I'm sure it's meant to have some literarry purpose, but I just found it annoying.

Yes, it is available in soft cover (at least it has been in the South Pacifc for nearly a year now). So I would assume it is here too. There is also the illustrated version, however, if you are wanting compact, that definately isn't the route to go :)

There are some verifiable facts in the book, along with a lot of fiction, and a whole bunch of things which can be left up to an individual to determine. Not sure why the church is so up in arms. It's just an author stirring the pot and finding something that sells. It's every bit as believable (or unbelievable) as the bible itself. Take it for what it is worth, and use your critical thinking skills to come to any conclusions you choose.

I enjoyed both that one and Angels and Demons. Some interesting stuff that I'm too lazy to try to verify, but also just some interesting situations. Good airplane reading material.

It's just a thriller. Think Tom Clancy style so-so writing with a plot about uncovering deep dark secrets of the Roman Catholic church.

I quite enjoyed it - so much so I have bought two others of his and will be reading them soon. If you get the hardcover there is an interesting puzzle on the cover which you can solve with a little help from the internet. I don't think the paperback is out here.

i had read two of this other books first and they were really good ... in comparison the davinci code was not that good ...

also, without spoiling it for others, i had read 'other' books on the topic that delved further into it and so the fictionalized version was not a huge surprise for me.

I picked up the illustrated version of DaVinci Code and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good twisting thriller with a seemingly solid academic foundation. Mind you, the notion of Jesus being just a normal joe with a wife and kids and whose descendents are protected by a secret society is really nothing new in literature. I'm glad I picked up the illustrated version, because it shows you the precise clues in paintings such as the Last Supper, plus actual pictures of the interiors and objects within places like the Louvre and Westminster Abbey.
I just started Angels and Demons, and I'm liking it thus far.

I read the DaVinci Code and Demons and Angels last summer. I found them to be almost the exact same story.

A couple of weeks ago History Channel had Inside the DaVinci Code. I missed it but I heard it was good. They interviewed Dan Brown and pressed him on his accuracy. He kept saying it was well researched and verifieable but it is fiction.

He's drummed up a lot of business for tourism, especially the L'ouvre has a DaVinci Code tour from what I understand.

Very entertaining but the facts fall very short of accurate.

I just finished Angels and Demons and loved it. I was going to read Deception Point next but opted for da Vinci Code because I wanted to read it before I heard any hollywood hype about it (being that Hanks has accepted the lead character role). I just started Da Vinci Code and am only into the 5th chapter and it is alot like Angels and Demons so far.
