Through my ad on craigslist, this guy sent me a letter saying he would loke to photograph me. Obviously not for free....he said it would be "time for prints". He said he would mainly like to focus on my tattoos. Has anyone heard of his comapny...Irish Heart Photography? I called him once to ask some questions, and left a message. I am a little curious about a company that doesn't have a website.

I would have thought a photo company without a website is just a photographer without a website ?

If a SP doesn't have a website, does that make her any less a SP, or less of good one for that matter ?

I might understand the correlation if the business in question was a website designer without a website.

An online sample of your work as a professional photographer is tantamount to a photo business.
How else would one be able to share thier portfolio with potential clients without travelling around the country with a portfolio book in person?

SP's sell a service. That service isnt necessarily dependant on visuals, and an SP can sell thier services without a potential client seeing an image of them.

Web designers sell a service, and can in fact sell that service without actually having a website, by pointing thier potential clients to sites that they created....ie, kind of an ala carte portfolio.

Photographers sell a service that is 100% visual. If they cant show someone what thier work looks like, they will never be hired.

I dont know, makes sense to me.

Umm... how did they do it before the internet ? Photographers have been around marketing their services longer than the internet has existed. I'm not saying that it's not ' helpful ' to have a website to market such services, but it's just as ridiculous to claim that it's impossible to be a photographer without a website. And isn't it absurd to assume that a photographer is going to market his/her services throughout the country ? Doesn't that depend on the photographer and the type of work they do ?

I think it's fair to say that most businesses tremendously benefit from having a website. I think it helps to give legitimacy, and it's expected. But I think word of mouth and referalls can play a great role too.

I had the same dude email me too, sorry but unless you run or are in a reputable business, and have proof of the work you have done, then I am NOT interested (IMHO):)

A website is not the only way to showcase your photographic portfolio. It all depends on how you want to sell your business, who your clients are, location, etc. Having a website does not in any way what so ever add legitimacy. Just think about all the scams out there with web sites. If i was looking for a photographer I'd start my search in yellow pages. Look for someone who's been around for a good while, a member of the BBB.......then i'd look online to see if they had a web site. If not I'd go to their studio. How easy is it to grab a bunch of photos from the web and post them as your own on your web site? Anyone can do this.

"Photographers sell a service that is 100% visual. If they cant show someone what thier work looks like, they will never be hired."

My goodness we've come so far in the last 5 years that the internet is now the only valid medium to show case a your business??? I don't think so. Web site is just another tool to sell yourself - nothing else.
