So I've started dragging my ass to the gym again but all my workout partners are either busy or lazy. I find it boring to work out all the time by myself and thus lose my motivation to go. So my question is this: what helps to motivate you?

*and no, I can't stare at the arerobics class all the time either because then I won't workout at all.:D *

I usually have pics of the girls I would like to see myself with. Got the ones I really like blown up and stuck on the wall and ceilings.
The girls I'd like to be with are pictured in my head, plus there are some hotties in the gym I go to. So as I pump the iron, I daydream that they are swooning over my rippling muscles! ;)

To relieve boredom with your workouts, keep changing your routine.

Perhaps you could try scheduling it into your day as you would any other appointment. Having it written down or even just committing a time to yourself to go will help place importance on it.

Just as an aside though. If you are finding it boring - you aren't training hard enough or focussing well enough. When you do your weight routine, you shouldn't be able to talk to anybody. You need to be concentrating on your movements and making sure they are done perfectly.

If it is the time in between sets you find boring you could try subsetting or super setting. This will also save you a good chunk of time. Stretching in between is another option.

I will agree that cardio can be boring if you are not doing anything. Try bringing some music along, or a book or newspaper which is on tape. Listening to something interesting will help the time pass. You could also try new forms of cardio which are more challenging to you - thereby breaking up the monotany and increasing your physical fitness level.

I'm sure you will find that by going to the gym alone you will have a much more effective workout, since nothing is distracting you. You will also find that if you focus, you can complete the weight portion of your routine more than twice as fast as if you were training with a friend.

Holy crap. Interesting that you should throw that out there so casually.

If you do land one of these women, it should prove to be great cardio for her when she bolts while speed dialing 911 when she sees her pic blown up and plastered on your walls.

Some gyms don't let anyone keep cell phones on them now because individuals of questionable character take pictures of the women when they wouldn't expect it.

Savage depending on your workout some good techno tunes fresh from Ibiza will help you keep going and pumped up.

That works for me.

Good luck.

people usually get 'bored' with working out because they are working out for the wrong reasons ...

if you ask most people why they work out they will say 'to keep fit' or 'to get into shape' or 'to lose weight' and NONE of these is a specific goal and therefore provides no benchmarks and therefore no motivation.

ask yourself why you want to workout and what you would ultimately like to gain from those workouts ... try to be very specific and then examine whether those goals and the means you have chosen are the same thing.

exercise can be accomplished in many ways ... from parking your car further from work (rather than closer), to taking the stairs instead of an elevator ... to walking an extra block to have lunch ... or walking around the block after work rather than heading straight for your car etc.

going to the gym is probably one of the worst ways to develop a routine ... better to buy some used dumbells and simply do a few reps and sets when you get out of bed and are waiting for the coffee to brew ... you will then workout everyday but pick different muscles to work ... its quick, its easy, and you don't have to go anywhere.

Monday: Chest -- flat flyes; presses; flye-press combo.
Tuesday: Shoulder -- front presses, reverse presses, shrugs, laterals.
Wednesday: Back: one-arm rows -- to the chest/to the stomach
Thursday: Legs: squats, lunges
Friday: biceps curls, triceps kickbacks

toss in a few ab hollows to strengthen your abs and you are set.

mix up the routine anyway you want and like ... if you have the time, do two body parts per day.

at most, it will take you 10 minutes per day to do some exercise that will still result in some gains. no gym membership, no parking hassles, no driving around looking for excuses.

I know the exact feeling, as I have to drag myself often too. One way is to look at is as a commitment to yourself and your well being. Another way I find, is to just look at others. Either good or bad can motivate you. I work in a government office, and looking at some of the people around there drives me full force to the gym amost. *eg*
A good thermogenic stimulator helps too. Knowing that your phycially able to preform certian tasks is another up point to working out. I work out up to 6 days a week, and I go by myself. Even with a broken foot and a cast up to my knee, I find myself there. Determination and willpower. Some days I don't want to but once your there, its all worth it. Keep a log and chart your progress. Its a good way to see how far you have come. When I started leg presses months ago, I did 90 lbs. Now I am up to 230lbs and still going. Once you hit a certian point, motivation is amost not a factor anymore. Seeing the results of your hard work should be motivation enough by then to stick with it. A good gym with good atmosphere and music helps too. Stick with it, you will be glad you did.

Cheers

Which gym ya go to? Maybe if U say which gym, one of us may belong their and can kick your ass 4 u.

Once you DO have a routine and start seeing results-U will have a problem with NOT going to the gym. Trust me it gets addicting. Remember to do the workout that you have planned in your training journal and nothing else. If you do more, you will over train and spend too long there. This is for when you are feeling addicted to the gym.

What keeps me motivated.....I go first thing in the morning so when I wake up I grab a coffee in the kitchen, Take 3 (old style) Hydroxycut, jump in the Truck crank Metallica, hit drive thru starbucks and grab an Americano.....by the time I hit the gymn I'm vibrating and I gotta work out to take the edge off :)

Works like a charm everytime....lol
