Hi all,

I'm going to start hitting the gym again.. and being older and overweight I have some concerns about dressing casual and not looking dorky etc. Have not been to the gym in decades and am not one for fashion sense at the best of times :)

So what's good ok to wear? I'm, a big guy, sweat a fair bit etc.. just looking to be low key and not stand out, have sweat stains stand out etc..

Sweats/Pants?
T-shirts?

Where is a good place to buy gear from that isn't an arm and a leg?

Buy your gear at Superstore or Walmart. It isn't a fashion show. You can get a decent pair of sweats and a hoodie cheap. Buy black if you are worrying about sweat stains though I would be more worried if you were not sweating.

You want to sweat and I find it helps to raise my body temp faster if I dress extra warm. Keep guzzling water for your entire workout, get some headphones and listen to music that fires you up and keep your ass on the treadmill or eliptical or whatever you will be using.

who gives a crap what you look like. i'm 37 and probably one of the older guys in the gym. i wear simple baggy black shorts and a t-shirt. i also wear those tight fit work gloves you get a marks workwear world or whatever the hell it's called these days. i lift heavy and don't want blisters so the gloves offer good protection, especially in the palm. not a fan of the fingerless workout gloves so these are my alternative. as for sweating, if you're not then you're not working hard enough, so why would you worry about it. some nights i will do an hour and a half of cardio (step machine and bike) and the sweat pours out of me. by the end it looks like someone has poured a bucket of water on me as i'm drenched. no one has ever said a word to me about my attire or sweat so don't worry about it. only time people say anything, and this annoys me immensely is when i'm working on a machine and some inconsiderate prick will come over and interrupt me to ask how many sets i have left. seriously there are numerous exercises you can do for each body part. do you really need that machine at that time? pisses me off royally. i just tell them when you see me leave, i'm done. if they push then i tell them screw off. unless you're a hot woman, i want to be left alone at the gym.

Wow. You sound like a winner. A guy politely asks how many sets you have and he is an inconsiderate prick? How would he interrupt you? People would be inconsiderate if you were trying to squeeze out your last rep but if you are just sitting there and they ask you'd have to be a real prick to answer the way you do. It happens all the time and I have never in my life seen anyone take issue with it.

I'm not really worried about it being a fashion show.. but I want to feel confident so that I am comfortable being there.. my last few efforts to try and hit the gym have been big failures so I'm just trying to eliminate anything that might put me off.. I have to do this for my health.. 280 is just too much for me, not to mention I need the stress release and being in better shape should lead to better sex :)

What about sock if I go with shorts.. I'm thinking black shorts and shirt.. My runners are white.. so white ankle socks?

wear whatever you want sock colours don't matter, although 2 the same colour is best. The best way to keep a low profile at the gym is to have good gym manners (be considerate of others and to wipe equiptment when you are done) Just watch what others are doing to learn the rules of the gym. A small secret: no one cares what you are doing, gym time is self focused and most folks aren't watching to see what you are wearing....

It doesn't matter what you wear. No one will look at you unless you are a hot girl. I wear a short that I got from Walmart, old t-shirts with numerous small holes and has advertising for suppliers that I worked with before, black socks and a regular Nike shoe. Bring a music player and a ear phone and start working away. Personally I just use my smartphone and watch YouTube while working out.

Thanks for everyones input.. it's helped a lot in selecting some gear I can feel comfortable in - both physically and phsycolgically!

Winners had a little bit of stuff, but not much in my size.. got a couple good deals though
Sportchek had some stuff but their inventory levels suck

Between the two I got it figured out with your advice and some input from google searches and this thread in particular:

So tomorrow I'm off to the gym for the first time in over a decade or more - scary - but I'm looking forward to it, and being able to have better sessions with our favourite SP's is great motivation!
