Garmin. Hands down. As far as model, it all depends on your needs, wants and budget.

Are you going to be doing a LOT of travelling in the USA where you need traffic info, which is paid on a subscription basis and only available in some cities. If not and you need bluetooth, then the 660 should satisfy you. The 6xx series is now discontinued though, so you probably should get a 750 or 760 as the prices of the 7xx are coming down fast.

yes, I will be in the US. What is the diff between 680 and 780. Yes 680 is older model, but Costco still sell it at $ 399.

You think this is a good buy ?

BTW, why you guys hate TOM TOM I think the map share is great idea I just wish Garmin has it.

Thanks Guys

Michel

I have yet to buy one for myself but I'm leaning towards Garmin too. They have maps of some cities around the world especially places I frequent.

I have a Garmin GPS. It's an old model that isn't even made anymore that I got for ~200.00$ a few years ago. I use it with topographic maps and a compass. Mainly I use it to record waypoints so that I can calculate distance. I don't think that I would use many [if any] of the features on the newer, more expensive units.

Here is a link on the comparison of the different models. http://tinyurl.com/5rt2gt

As you can see, there is not much difference except in price and the ability to use MSN which is pricey and available in select markets. Newer versions are faster and have a few added features. IMO, it's not worth to go for the x80 series and a basic unit with bluetooth is probably all you need. The prices are coming down. In the USA, unless there is a pricing error, the 850 is going to be sold at the Source Circuit City for $359 US!

TomTom uses a different mapset than Garmin (different provider). Garmin uses Navteq while TT used TeleAtlas. There are pros and cons to each GUI. I prefer, for the most part Garmin. I have the 650 and I will be getting the 750 or 850 depending on the price because the 6xx series, to me, is too slow, in providing turn by turn directions. You can also get a LOT more maps from Garmin and Garmin has been doing this a very long time. It's not only a question of brand name but reliability and customer and service support.

I have a Garmin 660 that i really like. It has more features than what i need but for the price and who knows what my needs will be down the road i decide to splurge.

Heres a tip don't buy in Canada go online and order from a discount store in the USA. Theres hundreds so take your time. I choose Amazon because shippings free and there reputable. My Garmin cost $350CA with duty it landed just shy of $400. That unit was selling in Canada for $600 and thats before taxes. You can't ship it directly into Canada because of laws so what you have to do is send it to company like TBS which is based in Pt. Roberts. (You have to register before using there service, its free.) http://www.tsbshipping.com/ When you order you give your name with TBS's address. With tracking which all the shipping companies use these days you'll get an email telling you that your package has arrived. You show up, present your drivers licence, pay the $2 dollar service charge, and head back to Canada. I could have save $42.00 if i wanted to smuggle it across the border. I choose not to. Kev don't look good in stripes. If your thinking about buying a cheap unit then this might be a hassle but if your looking at spending a few hundred dollars then you might want to head my advice. Cheers --- Kev

Costco prices tend to be really good when on sale. Plus their return policy is unheard of.

Kev's got some good points, but whatever you do, never ship something from the USA into Canada using a courier or Fed Ex type agent. if you must, use US Mail.

Remember though, you still have to pay additional PST and GST on the item. don't skimp out and risk your car being impounded and have a permanent record on your immigration profile just to save paying it at the border. Another caveat, Amazon will charge you Washington State sales tax which is actually pricey. You're better off finding someone else who doesn't charge tax and use them instead. In Kev's case, locally the prices were really high so it's worth it for him. I am still waiting for the price of a 76CSX or 60CSX to drop to a decent level.

Also, unlike at the Pacific or Peace Arch crossing, those bastards at the Canadian Border in Point Roberts will make you pay duty on everything. It's disretionary at the other crossings.

I wouldn't say its discretionary at other crossings. The laws apply whatever crossing you use however with heavier traffic at PA or Pacific are they more leaniant? I don't know. I think its a crap shoot and it really depends on the agent who you have to deal with. I did pay $30 dollars in Washington state tax though. For the final outcome it was still worth it but it i could reduce that tax i would do more searching.

Noob with the item in question i couldn't bring it into Canada by UPS or by any of the other shipping companies, but are you saying it could have been shipped to Canada by US mail? Because that contradictes what Amazon told me.

What would you call it when routinely people go across the line almost every weekend with several hundreds plus of dollars of goods being declared and the CBSA let them through? I call that discretionary. ;) If you have a hot chick, preferrably Asian then the chances are even better that you'll be let through, as long as you don't look like a gang banger.

Amazon or the seller can choose to use whatever shipping method they want. If they don't want to send the item to Canada they don't have to. The same with Costco.com. They won't ship to Canada even with USPS. The same is true with other companies. If they use UPS as a shipper, you're really screwed. With your Nuvi, you did exactly what I do.;)

I could be wrong, didn't Amazon use UPS or Fed Ex to have it shipped to Point Roberts?

Are you using it for car travel or hiking/geocaching? I think Garmin has GPS's for both activities but Tom Tom is just for the car. It seems some stores only focus on certain brands and so it is hard to comparison shop. I have an older Magellan which lacks lots of the bells and whistles like color maps.

that's right pokeman. garmin manufactures both off road, aviation, marine, and on road gps units. Magellan a few years ago had the first crossover gps where it actually served both functions of off road and on road. TomTom only currently manufacturers vehicle GPS units. Garmin still doesnt have a crossover GPS.

Actually TomTom doesn't suck, it's just ok. Both have their pros and cons but most people feel Garmin is better.
