Came home last night about 8:15 and found that someone had been workin the deadbolt on our apartment door. The metal on the outside of it was bent. From appearences on the outside it seemd that they tried, but didn't get in as we also have the metal covers over the frame as well as a striker plate behind the deadbolt. Walk into the house and find things somewhat trashed and stuff missing. I'm so bloody pissed off. It could've been a lot worse, but it still pisses me off.

They stole my mountain bike, 300 in cash, my USB key, some jewlery, some of which is not replacable, and it appeared they were going to take some DVD's but left a stack of them in the entrance to the bedroom.

Cops came by just over an hour after I called it in, and took some stuff with them for prints. Thankfully, they didn't take credit cards... siting on top of my desk, or my computer, didn't touch the stereo, TV etc. There were a ton more DVD's in the cabinet under the TV and they didn't even touch 'em. so it seems to me that it was someone looking for drug money.

Also, looking at the lock the cops agreed that this wasn't a quick job, they really had to work at that lock to get in.

So my question is..... "which one of you did it?" I know you probably followed me home and knew a few things about me which motivated you to work so hard to get in. Na, just kidding. Like I said, it could've been a whole lot worse, but I'm wondering if they'll come back for more because know they know what we got, and what they left behind. Not to mention, the way the broke in seems to be a pretty fool-proof method. The cops agreed that there's nothing wrong with the security. Maybe I should get about three more deadbolts. Then I could be like one of those inner city paranoid renters in NY.

Wow, that fuckin sucks man !
It's a nasty thing when shit like that happens cuz you feel
so violated personally.

Yah watch out for a return visit, these creeps know that stuff
gets replaced by insurance claims and usually make a return
visit in about a month. Let's hope not though man.

Doesn't this shit make you wish you could use the mafia
security system? A couple of no-necks just sitting at your
place with nothing better to do.

Expect a return visit from these pieces of shit. If it was something that they took their time doing then they are confident that they could've gotten away with it. This would tell me they either live there or know someone that does or have regular access to the building so be very careful.

There would be a less property crime if us law abiding citizens had the right to shoot trespassing mother fuckers.

Thanks for your comments, I hear ya' I'm home today as I had to wait to get the locks changed etc. I keep imagining them trying to break in while I'm at home, and I just wait for them to walk through the door while I charge the bastard, grab 'em by the throat and push him to the ground while I punch his lights out. I don't feel so violated as I do mad that it happened.

You guys make a good point about them coming back. My mom suggested it was an inside job as well (They're apartment managers). I'll have to do a littel work to figure out what I can do to try and prevent it from happening again... I don't know if I can. I also don't want to move either as I feel like I'm just running from those peices of shit. But I also don't want anymore of my stuff going "missing" either.

my daddy told me

a long time ago that a lock only stops an honest man, but a lot of locks slows down the dishonest ones. go ahead, put in the extra deadbolts - if they had to work that hard to get in the first time, maybe the extra locks will slow them down enough that the risk of getting caught outweighs any loot they hope to steal. from ur description, i'm suprised they stuck around long enough to see it through - u must have a very private location...

and while it's illegal to shoot people, it's not illegal to have a mean-tempered, hungry, big-toothed rottweiller or even two sitting there waiting for the next whatever-crawled-out-from-under-a-rock sob that tries waltzing into the place.

sorry 'bout ur loss man, hope u had insurance. even with that, working with the insurance agent to replace what can be is a fucking pain - i learned that from experience.

There'd probably be less property crime if everyone stopped buying stuff they knew was stolen, to drop the market prices of stolen property to the point where it's not worth the risk. Everyone claims to not support that industry, but it's damn tempting when someone says "this bike costs $4k at the store; you can have it for $200"...

It's easier to just shoot the crackhead mother fuckers

I never thought I would agree with anyhing this guy would say... but .....

how about cutting off one hand for the first offence ..... then, the other for the second.... this would, if I can say it, "cut" the crime

144,

Sorry to hear about the B&E. When you had your locks changed did the property manager get a copy of the new key? Even if you're renting I'd suggest you not give a copy of your key to the management. While probably a violation of rental agreement I say fuck em. If they need into your place for maintenance they can schedule it in advance and you can be there. If they to get in for an emergency they can break down the fucking door.

As for other preventative measures for future break ins:
-get an alarm....if you don't/can't get the actual alarm talk to a buddy who has one and get a sticker and place it on your door
-not sure how handy you are or the construction of your building but install a PROPER deadbolt....most of the pieces of shit builders use have a 1/2 or 3/4 inch throw (the part that extends from the door into the frame)...get one with a 1" throe
-also look at a bolt buddy as they add to the effectiveness of the lock

What you say is true killer, but human nature being what it is, this can never happen. Someone is always wanting to get a great deal - even if it sounds too good to be true.

Sorry to hear about your lost. Just out of curiosity, what is the general area of your apartment? Would it be possible to install a dummy camera outside the door to freak out the burglars?

If they want to get in bad enough, they will. So, you have to catch them in the act. Install a well hidden miniature camera and record events onto an offsite server or a hidden time-lapse recorder. If it happens again, and it is an inside job, you'll have all the ammunition you need to trace these miscreants.

So I visited the locksmith down the street yesterday and asked a bunch of questions about security etc. I told 'em how they broke in and asked what I could to improve things.

So they come over today and installed a gaurd or a metal ring that sits inside the door directly behind the deadbolt. So what happens is that if anybody tries to get behind the lock, they'll just hit metal.

Any of the better locks have them. if you're looking for better locks in your place don't go with Weiser, go with Shlag or mulit-lock.

Broken in to.

It really does suck when shit like this happens! Have a cousin that caught a burgler in the act, in his house one time, and it nearly costy him his life. Guy went for a knife from the kitchen first thing, and it was all that my cousin could do to keep the guy from cutting him up. Luckily, he'd gotten a hold of the guy from behind the second he'd grabbed the knife. And the guy never did get the chance to try slicing his way out of the house.
A room mate sleeping downstair's finally heard all the racket and dialed 911. Then he'd dashed upstair's to give his buddy a hand subduing the thief. The guy was obviously freaked and pissed, and wanted out a there in a bad way, prompting the two would be victim's to beat the ever lovin crap out of him, big time! One RCMP told the guy's afterwards that the only thing they'd done wrong was to have called them a little too soon. Said they shoulda kept on pounding on the bastard a little bit longer, and then, called them in.
