Worry

Items that were PST exempt that will now increase by 7%:
Restaurant meals, Hydro and Heating bills, new homes over $400,000, landline phone bills, most food products, school supplies, gym memberships, taxi fares, hair cuts, movie and theatre tickets, home renovations, newspapers and magazines, domestic airline tickets, funerals, real estate fees, and dry cleaning.

It means that whereever you only paid GST (as an individual) you will also pay PST.

EG haircuts, restaurant meals, some professional services (eg your accountant if you have one).

So, if you paid 1$ plus GST for a burger, you would have paid 1.05 including GST.

You will now pay $1.12 under HST.

It's a 2 billion tax transfer from business to individuals. That is why it is called revenue neutral.
I'm a business owner and since my rates will increase by about 7% I'm not happy about it at all. I suppose technically I could lower than a little to account for the fact I pay PST on some supplies, but the biggest component in my business is labour, so effectively I'm going to have to charge more and potentially loose business. So it's not revenue neutral if consumers spend less.

it seems like this isn't a BC thing but a federal thing... Most provinces are going to this HST and only a few left are holding out.

No point being the oddball. I found it interesting that of all the provinces going to HST, BC is supposed to be the lowest rate. What about Alberta? They had no PST... what is their HST going to be? (yes I couldn't be bothered right now to search the answer to that :) )

One thing I would like to see is tax included in the pricing of everything. So what you see is what you pay... not subtotal + tax.

I would rather keep more tax money in the province for sure. Just be interesting to see all the little details of how this tax will work. I was trying to figure all the things I just pay PST on now. Big one that comes to mind are my season tickets. They just have GST now. Thats over a thousand dollars right there

I think for home sales, sellers will be eating most of this cost

Ah, gotta love the Liberals and their taxes:
Raised the PST
Introduced the 'Levy' for large electronic products
Introduced the Carbon Tax
And now ramming the HorseShit Tax down our throats just to get $1.6 b from the Federal gov't.

Gordo "The TaxMan" Campbell strikes again! Really, what did everyone expect? They DO know how the man operates, right? Why is everyone suprised and/or upset that he's doing this? He's planned it out for a long time...

wait till the mighty federal libs get into power then there will be a federal carbon tax on top of your BC carbon tax, hst, etc. keep voting lib & ndp & watch what will happen. its time the west started looking after its own future without the midcan dictatorship from ottawa. let the 2 midcan provinces figure out what they will get then if the west stops supporting their "whats best for you" attitude. put the fed libs in & watch more tax & spend lib games along with the dropping of the ball which they do all to often. the biggest platform for the libs is TAX & SPEND. you will say the PC blew allot now but remember iggy said it all had to be ok'd by him so the libs are as much to blame for the midcan spending now. remeber last fall when the libs ndp & bloc were going to blow 30B on the promise of kicking the pc out? 30B would have been just the tip of their spending spree. everyone wants socialism, handouts from government & programs but noone wants to pay for it. well guess what, I had to WORK for what i have and got no help from any socialist programs so my point is, if you want handouts expect to be taxed, if you dont want handouts then expect to pay for everything yourself.

I hope the protest movement picks up more steam. If it does go through, as seems likely right now, then it'll be interesting to see what happens to the real estate market with everyone paying $30K+ more per home, even after the $20K plus rebate on homes over $400K. Who will eat the price? The seller? the buyer? both?

I'm sure as hell not looking forward to my new utility bills.

I wonder how many people that voted Liberal, would have if they knew then, what we all know now ?

Carole James, wasn't really an option, the Greens didn't have a hope in hell, so would it really have made a difference ?
