I'm looking at buying a Franchise in the near future...can anyone recommend a better than average one, with relatively low cost start-up (under 500K) with a very good expected return?

How hard are you willing to work. do you have relatives who would work with you? Do you have location preferences? And what do you consider a good expected return?

As mentioned Timmy's has classically been a pretty good bet. They are hard work to start up though and these days finding employees for low paying jobs is not that easy.

Family wouldn't work for me...they are all independent, or don't need the money and headaches.

I think Timmy's is starting to look saturated. Location is definately key no doubt. Tims requires 175k min, cash to start and that just gets you going, and doesn't include lease for land.

I used to go to some franchise shows years ago, it may help you to see what's out there.

next one in Vancouver is.
September 27 – 28, 2008
Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre

look at the CFA site for the show, and also for some ideas.

If you buy a franchise do your homework on the company, as I looked into this years ago, and there are companies that just want the start-up money, and once you have paid their "franchise fee", your on your own. Then there are companies that may offer you some help but will not protect your territory.... Talk to other franchise owners, (picked at random by you)

I know there are some reviews , maybe even review boards about franchises, as some people think buying a franchise is the easy way to making money.... Like any business if you don't work at it, it will not work. Sure some are easier than others, but do your home work on your future Partner! This will save you lots of trouble in the long run if you have a great franchiser.

Thanks for the info!

I went to a Franchise show years ago, and most of it was no-name freaks trying to get new clients.

Personally, I am not interested in dealing with teenagers. If I had to hire min wagers, I'd only hire asians relatively new to Canada and old people.

That woman that blew up her Taco Delmar and then killed herself...really makes me think, she didn't think her situation out.

Popper scooper's

I am all way thinking of what can i do to make money ..because i am perpetually broke all the time.
My latest is an better dog shit piker upper.. if you have a dog you know what i mean
I thought up a few idea last night .. just need the capital to get them made
just some very inexpensive easy to use poop be gone.
Give me a problem i will come up with some type of solution.

Through the years i realised that a one man show . like what i had being a carpenter jack of all trade , was not going to make it for me ..and it has not.
I started looking at different things that seemed to be more profitable
The pub idea got my attention for a while .. there a realized that good food and sexy waitresses could make the buesiness. so I looked into it about the time many were get ting out .. One thing that i did find out is that the liquor license was the most important asset.. and that a strip bar was the most lucrative business to have ,this i got from a consultant.
But dropped the idea .. to much over head and dealing with employees, not for me. In fact any store has the same problems. That is when i went into the stock market ,of course 911 fucked that up for a while . But i still beleave in trading in the market .. and if you don't want to trade then buy a good companies stoke ..if you want Timmy or star bucks ( not say they are good )
but then you own part of the company and you will do good if they do good.. with out all there head aches and you can sell it any time. get a stoke that pays dividends

There is someone who has started this...... I can't remember where I saw this segment on TV about it, can be anywhere in North America, I saw it last year or so , a guy that does the pooper scooper I have no clue what his name or business name is but I remember his slogan somewhat...

were #1 at number #2.

Yes the Franchise shows of years ago were small companies, which I am sure are still at these shows now, but there are some major players who attend now. One of the things I like to do is see what is doing well in other markets ei Europe, and see if it could work in Canada or USA, so that way I can maybe get a larger territory to offer the products or services.

If I were to invest today, I would rather look for a well established business. There are people who want to retire, or move, or just want to get out. You never know, unless you ask, and some of these people will sell you their business for a song, as they want it to work out, it was their baby.... I would suggest you think of what you would like to do first, and then that may help you decide what to go after.

Red Lobster

Vancouver Needs one! I can't believe that Vancouver doesn't have one!

Oh and does anybody know why some bigger Franchises aren't in Vancouver? Is it because the space is too expensive, or are franchises more expensive to open there? IE Applebees, there is one in Poco, and One in Burnaby, but downtown, nope.

Will work for RED LOBSTER! LOL

Are you serious? Right on the coast and there is no Red Lobster? I thought for sure there would be one there.
I know there is no Goodlife Fitness there. The closest one is in Vernon. All across Canada, but not in Vancouver. I found it odd that the closest IHOP was in Abbotsford. Mind you, there isn't an IHOP in Calgary. Still trying to figure that one out.

get a money mart, or one of those other loan sharking places, they are cheap and a lot easier than a restaurant, and make more
