Because of course, what Vancouver really needs is a little more gentrification and "upscale" (aka overpriced and unaffordable for the average Vancouverite) shoebox-sized condo highrises. I stayed with a friend who lived on Seymour/Nelson, but who's apartment overlooked Granville st and to be honest, I have no idea how he managed to live there without going crazy.

The noise from people going out to the Granville st "upscale" clubs or restaurants is so insanely loud, he'd go to sleep at night to the sound of dumbass drunk kids screaming, signing, crying, throwing bottles around, you name it. It would go on until at least 4:00am, sometimes as late as 5:00am and while it was definitely worse on weekends, it was still loud every day of the week. Opened windows meant having to put up with it and closing windows meant trying to sleep in the heat with noise just a little less loud. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would think dishing that kind of money on a condo, whether renting or buying, is a good deal.

Everything is concrete, concrete and more concrete. I remember my dog even refusing to use what little patch of grass I could find on that block and realizing there were so many dogs using the same patch that it was too gross even for a dog. Seriously, when the dog even thinks it's too gross to use as a toilet...yuck.

I loved walking her on weeknights and going to those 24hrs xxx shops! Those were the only thing I liked about living there..lol Aside from that, the whole massive rush of drunk suburban kids was nauseating. So now what? More "upscale" clubs and restaurants, more drunk losers and more condos for people to enjoy the even louder crowds? Oh and even more dogs sharing whatever little grass is left? Awesome.

But honestly, while it is a shame the Cecil is closed and the area is going to look identical to surrounding blocks with its shiny high rises, what people should really start worrying about is the next area the developers are planning to attack; the West End. I personally do not understand why people in Vancouver are not more concerned about the replacement of buildings or communities that are full of history. With only shiny condos, you have a soul-less, vibe-less city without any warmth. So what if it looks "pretty". I think that's a shame.

You got that right. Vancouver's natural beauty aside, I increasingly don't understand the attraction some people have to this city (all things considered).

Natural beauty is why most people love it and come here. I would never live downtown in a shoebox but I enjoy going there to shake it up every once in a while :)

Good thing the owner of Penthouse is still not that old yet. Looks like he'll be the last one left standing in downtown in the short term. Well, there's always Montreal to visit, the erotic capital of Canada. :) :)
