I volunteer my time every winter with the "out of the Cold" program here in Toronto. It's a huge volunteer program where we feed the homeless and give them a warm bed every night during the winter.
It's offered by churches, synagogues and mosques who participate in the program, so that each one opens it doors one night a week, so there's always a hot meal & a bed in a warm place. We even have shuttle buses that will pick them up at various points around the city and then shuttle them to the church, synagogue whatever that is offering it that night.
Some don't always have the $$$ to donate, and it doesn't always have to be $$$. Offering one's time is just as important and often more appreciated. I've met some interesting people who are homeless. Granted, some have mental illness, or alcohol problems but some are down on their luck and are ok folks.
