I will be seeing this movie..I loved the original Anima and saw a few of the other based on the same .

I don't really understand the whole controversy about a white actress playing the major,I personally never saw the major as Asian even though it was Japanese and set in Japan..For one thing most of the main character looked more white and that was the sandards with Japanese Anima.

With the mutable themes that ghost in a shell has , most focusing on what makes a person human,I think one was allso once you are human brain in an android,do you have a nationality or race. And that seem to be what the critics of the chose for actress are missing.

It does not MATTER what race the actress is because the android body put the person beyond the confines and pregarises of the human if they want to evolve.

Of course that allso is part of what the story is all about
Evolution. And dealing with a new type of predgadice.y

All valid points. Which is why I was less concerned about this casting choice being Hollywood whitewashing. I understand that they want to sell tickets and that leads producers to select attractive, popular, (white) actors.

The Great Wall on the other hand completely boggles my mind: what possible reason would you have to believe Matt Damon in a historical piece set in China with a Chilean (I think he's Chilean).sidekick?

The director of the original films had also given the new version his blessing. That and the fact that the live action Dragon Ball set the bar pretty damn low.

Hope those spider tanks (tachikoma) are in it.

The director was def in it for the cash out....if you see all the major films now they have at least some ref to China, whether through actors or blatant product placements in crapfest films like Transformers Age of Extinction

Whitewashing?- maybe- probably- it's generally about the money.
Seems likely that missy SJ strikes a better marketing chord than any current Asian actresses- and her recent roles kicking ass in Marvel themed productions also help drive the box office.
A prime example is Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher- who in the Lee Child books is a 6"-5" 250 lb wrecking machine- and whose physical presence alone is generally enough to stop any thought of aggression. Liam Neeson, Michael Rappaport, Adam Baldwin or Alex Skarsgard could have easily filled the role.
Fuck- I'm sure even sybian could play the part- grizzled looks? and most likely a don't-fuck-with-me steady 1000 yard stare..... :)
But Cruise will bring in the ladies and pump up the box.

Or how about getting a 6' Austrailian to play a Canadian with an American accent for 10+ years.......Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

As for Tom Cruise, he's perfect for a role that involves running....Every one of his damn films features him running if you think about it.

Agreed, but too bad that Reacher isn't necessarily a runner, but more of a slow-and-easy-win's-the-race sort of character.
Also in the books he generally doesn't really like to drive. In fact, he mostly opposes it with any regularity. Yet Tommy-boy is ripping around in stolen muscle cars making stunt-maneuvers.
I will say that TC does carry the role off quite well in the films, though- as long you don't know the books inside-out.
But is pretty much that way with most books vs films.
