There are a couple of schools of thought.
A bunch of independents are in Direct Competition with each other.
In the studio environment some people look at it like direct competition, but the trade off is, if it is a strong high quality studio environment, the increase in traffic should offset some of the competition issues, and if everyone does there job with equal thought to there personal well being, and the well being of the studio then the results should be positive across the board.
That being said you can see studios struggle, as they try to find some quality new people (which is required) and have them fit in with the rest of the group.
Also, smart SPs I think look for long term relationships with repeat clients. You might not get all of a guys business, because some guys like some VARIETY, but with out question if the SP, deems you a "good client" they will want you to come back. And the best ones find ways to reward good clients.
Better sessions, EXTRAs, small discounts etc. And the smart "good clients" tend not to kill the GOLDEN GOOSE by plastering all over PERB the complete details of your session.
