Bravo Freddy! One thing though...the 12-15fps will make the result looked like dropping frames.

Asciimation should be fairly simple to do automatically:
000) use mplayer/mencoder to downsample the video stream to 12 - 15 fps
001) use ImageMagic to split the resultant video into individual frames
010) use AA-lib to render each frame into ASCII
011) put a front end on this collection of files to display them properly:
100) set up inetd to run the front end on an appropriate port...
101) sudo kill -HUP `cat /var/run/inetd.pid`
