Decided to walk downtown to get the mail yesterday morning about 10:00.....after the drive from Alberta I needed the stretch...it was a nice morning, sun shining an all that stuff. About half a block from the house there's an old empty lot pretty well grown over.....I come up to it enjoying the stroll when I run plum into another critter out for a stroll, a big ass black bear. A grown male just about to cross the road in front of me........I stopped.....he stopped....we looked at each other for about two minutes or so, I'm thinking I'm about to become a news story.......not sure what he's thinking. There we stood, then slowly he turned and wandered back into the bush, I unpuckered my arse and continued on my way. Not sure what he did. Funny thing that, never happened while I was in Vancouver.

Didnt have any encounters as of yet. However I hear there are bears in the UBC area of Downtown Vancouver? My sister saw one last year. Also deers are there. There was one racoon who came up to our street couple of weeks ago. I saw him like a year ago 3 blocks up from us though. Squirrels are very popular I guess in Surrey. you see them in tons of places I assume.

If you're looking for bears, I understand there is a Kermode bear in Edmonton that needs a little TLC after a traumatic encounter with raisin bread. Maybe you could help with his PTSD?

There are no bears at UBC......but plenty up on the North Shore, and out towards Coquitlam, etc. I see skunks and raccoons all the time (I'm on the west side of Vancouver). Last night, when leaving a buddies house I went out the back gate, and just a few feet away from me was a skunk with his tail raised and bum pointing right at me. Needless to say, I backed off and let him do his thing and waited for him to wander off before I proceeded to my car.

Lots of wild animals around, especially in Burnaby....rumour had it that there was a small male black bear living around Burnaby Lake. We also have squirrels, raccoons, skunk, owls, eagles, mice, rats, hawks, coyotes...we used to have a bunch of rabbits, but the coyotes took care of them....blue jays, crows....all seen by me going to work in the morning, or stumbling home late at night.

We get quite a few bear sitings in Calgary...just last week fish&wildlife officials tranqed a bear in Cedarbrae. Also the we get the rare moose running around as well as deer...a couple months back whilst driving east on Memorial drive just past the deerfoot I saw 2 white tail does bounding over the C-train tracks and over the concrete safety barrier into the west bound lanes....10 minutes later I drive past where they ran across and sure enough the is a honda civic with the rear river door dented in with it's glass smashed...no deer carcass though so the deer lived and the gal driving the car got the shit scared out of her(this was near 12 noon and the gal was lucky she did not hit it head on)

Most brazen though was a coyote I drove past in an alley right in the middle of downtown at 1 in the afternoon...trotting down the alley with no fear at all.

The bears you'd meet in Vancouver would prefer you keep your ass puckered.
