Furniture Assembly Phobia

I have a problem with the whole assembly of furniture out of a box with directions scenario and am experiencing the anxiety that goes along with it today in a big ass way. I went to ikea (which is bad enough in that respect) only to find that they had no stock as they are moving stores so I went across the street to MOBLER. Now they are just a bit more expensive with a bit less style and even more complicated directions, and the pieces are in three boxes as opposed to one. FML.

I considered asking a friend to help but I learned the hard way that unless it is going to be holding their own clothes, people tend to take short cuts, ignore the directions and try to just throw the thing together to make me happy or think they are my hero. So I have a three box dresser in my hallway still unopened and a walk in closet worth of clothes on the floor of my new room. Fun times.

Just thought I would vent.

I hate putting that stuff together as well, always gotta call my female friend for help! If my dad was still alive, I would ask him, as he was a jack of all trades and could fix/put together anything.

Here and There
I build things for a living (and when opportunity presents, for fun as well) and I can't stand those assemble yourself furniture pieces. Annoying as all heck.

Schedule a day and do it. Swallow your frustration and fear. It's not going to hurt, no one is there to judge.
Don't say 'f*ck this' at any point, don't think 'this instructions are stupid' and get frustrated even if they are.
Don't react. Think it through.

Spread everything out, take inventory.
Match parts with diagram images, and work through the instructions and pieces a couple of times before you even start putting things together.

Take what they've given you and build.
I disagree...call a lifeline! Buy them food and drinks (within reason)! Make a bonding event out of it!

I actually like the challenge and try to do these Ikea things without looking at their instructions. Most of the time I get it right and use all their parts too :pound:

One thing I have noticed is the more expensive pieces are a lot easier while the less expensive stuff really do tax your brain with way too may screws, nails etc etc.

I'm one of those guys that gets that phone call from family and close friends, since I seem to have this knack for being able to assemble almost anything. But I still hate doing it.

I find it a challenge , but i am a visual guy and can see how things go together .. Usually can take a quick glance at the instruction if I actually have to and then I am off .

There area few time i do have to read them LOL , because i got some thing back wards ....

Just have the right tools and a space to work in That make it easier .. and some help to move it when it is together ...

If you can't visualize how some thing should look and go together then yes you will be overwhelmed.

by it because building things just is not the aptitude you have.

I see people all the time that build stuff and they have no patients , skill with tools or the will to do it right .. because they don't care to learn what is the right way to do it and take the time ti measure , cut and drill accurately .. it is all attitude and visualization .

In the end it looks like shit and then som eone else has to ether fix it or work around it and then the work they do looks like shit also.

Old Maxx50, same as you i find it a challenge too. Even with the instructions or set-up guide, it can make it even worse for some cause some of those instruction guides are so terribly written and lacking in detail. This were i find deductive reasoning and patience comes in handy in the assembly process.

Gotta love random angry comments...

I'm in the same boat as banger and maxx, I love putting those things together... its like doing a puzzle that actually has use to you afterwards.
