The American media lists medal standings according to the total gold medals earned, thereby placing themselves conveniently at the top of the list, with Norway in eleventh place, and Canada in sixth (02/17/06). Whereas Canada and Europe both place the countries according the aggregate numbers collected. Norway then is at the top with Canada tied in second, along with Russia and Germany, and the USA in third place. Americans always finds a way to put themselves on top, don't they?

Anybody surprised?

Noticed that tonight. Canada actually ranked ourselves in fourth because although we have the same amount of medals as the other two countries with 11 they had more Golds so we ranked ourselves below them (I believe this is the official ranking system). Canadian channels ALSO mention that the US ahas the most golds giving credit for that feat. I despise watching American media as it is simply an ass picker.

not surprised at all. remember the whole "worlds fastest man" fiasco from the bracelona games?

donovan bailey wins the 100m dash. it is long known that the winner of that race is considered the worlds fastest man. but no, not so fast because it wasn't an american this time then all of a sudden michael smith who won the 200m and 400m dash is said by the hulking u.s. media to be the worlds fastest man.

WTF?

doesn't matter i guess cause bailey kicked his ass in the custom 150m dash in toronto. also gimmie a break smith. how convenient for you to pull up lame when bailey passes your ass around the corner. fucking chump.

oh one more thing i noticed from the opening ceremonies. apparently it is custom for every country entering the stadium that when passing the host nation to dip their countries flag as a show of respect. every country adheres to this accept, yep you guessed it, the U.S.A., "the stars and stripes does not dip."

what kind of disrespect and fucked up symbolism is that garbage????

wasn't Michael Smith a mediocre Canadian decathalon competitor?
yep you are right. my mistake. smith was actually an awesome decathalon athlete that actually won everywhere except the olympics where he always choked.

but yeah thanks for the correction. it was michael johnson and he's a chump and certainly was never the worlds fastest man.

I have listened to CNN in Europe. They certainly did not make any effort to spin things in USA favor there. But then CNN is not really American and they are not really media.

But to the point, I partially agree with what you are saying. If they want to decide which country did the best at the Olympics, they should have a weighting system for the medals. Gold 3 Silver 2 Bronze 1. Total medal count seems as unfair as those with the most gold.

So while we are at it, let's only count meals won by athletes that are really amateur and don't take drugs.

I would rather watch a Fijian bob sled team make a great effort than watch the USA basketball team hot dog.

NBC is getting their ass kicked in the ratings down here. And an HBO guy is complaining their are no blacks in the winter Olympics.

Except for a few hockey games I don't give a f*** who wins.

A black American, Shani Davis from Chicago, won gold today in the 1000m speedskating event. This would be the same guy who cracked an historically all white sport and wound up being so shunned by teammates and sponsors the last time around that he now trains year round at the Calgary oval. He apparently has as little as possible to do with his fellow Americans at Turino and is letting his actions on the ice speak more loudly than anything he might say aloud. He's only 23 and has a bright future in the sport. Maybe he will marry a Canadian woman and compete for Canada in the next Olympics. Sort of like former Montreal Canadiens forward Paul DiPietro, who scored both goals for Team Switzerland today. He got his Swiss citizenship by virtue of marrying a Swiss woman. :)

as an american expat living in vancouver, i am intrigued by the sometimes fragile canadian psyche, which often manifests itself by bashing the usa ...

usually i just let it slide ... unless someone gets it totally wrong :D

here is a link to the official medal rankings of the 2006 Torino games:

Medal Rankings

although both methods of ranking are listed on the official games website, the following is stated quite clearly.

* The Olympic rules lay out that the Final Rank should be based on the overall number of gold medals won.
i guess it was the canadian media that was trying to find a way to put canada in a more favorable light ;)

as a canadian living in canada and seeing what americans will do to make sure that they look like they are number 1 even when they are not (michael johnson not the fastest man in the world) nothing seems to surprise me anymore.

i am also intrigued at the narsisistic attitude many americans have and that they don't get why a country and people are somewhat defensive towards them when everything good canadians have done the u.s. claims as their own.

TAO my apologies for small Canadian Minds

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9534792/
Here is the link to NBC the offical media of our neighbors to the south and as TAO reported America is third and tied with Canada. So congradulation to Canada with 1/3 the population we can compete head to head with them.

I always understood that the measure of Olympic supremacy was the total number of Gold medals won....not necessarily the total medal count.

With the motto "Higher, faster, stronger" - it doesn't really make sense to gauge victory by how many people can come in second or third - but rather by the number of "champions".

Not to diminish any Silver/Bronze medallists out there....

Nevermind how the rankings are done wrt gold-silver-bronze. Lets just look at the size of population that the country can draw on. Many of the European contries are smaller than most of the US states.
So either the loud mouthed, big footed yanks (they can neither talk nor walk) start rankings by state or the Europeans should count the EEC as one country. Then look where they end up.

Too far from Edmonton MP's now
My hometown newspaper (Houston Chronicle) lists the ranking as total medal count - so Norway is first. This thread is so similar to things I used to read in New Zealand about Australia....

Canada's population is just over 30 million. The population of the United States is just under 300 million. So we actually have about one-tenth the population, not one-third.

i still dont understand your point, the u.s never does well or will never do well in the winter olympics. Most of the gifted athletes down here go into the sports where the big money is to be made. compare how many americans take up speed skating compared ay to the neterlands. the number would be miniscule as a percentage of the population compared to the netherlands or norway. so for the u.s to win 3 medals let alone 3 gold is amazing. samethiong with any wintersport. there just a sideshow for most of us down here. the big shows are baseball, football, and basketball where the real money is to be made. as far as the t.v coverage is concerned havent watched any of the olympics, really boring shit. but in past years you caompare cbc and any network doing the olmpics the cbc sucked and it would totally be an embarresment to show something like that down here.

However the one thing you canadiens would defineately lead the world in and that would be whining, you need to get over yourselfs.

Here's another vintage whine for you...

I read a few years back that many Americans who are interested in the Olympics, and there must be at least one or two down there, tuned in where they could to the CBC's coverage as it had a more balanced approach to its presentation.

But then again, I'm just whining...

A delicate combination of many varietals so that no one grape dominates the bouquet.

Is a mediocre whine that goes with almost anything, but not really excellent with any one thing.

Be careful when pouring, the whine bruises easily especially when given negative reviews.

A whine that is liked by everyone, even the French:)

Actually the TV coverage of the Olympics by both CBC and NBC sucks. NBC only carries the sports where an American has a chance to medal and CBC only carries the sports where they thought the Canadians should medal but didn't. I really didn't need to watch the men's hockey team lose 4 times. Expecially when we had a woman winning gold in cross country while CBC was driving the knife in the men's hockey team's back for the 4th time.

The reality is that Canada has more medals out of these games than ever before. Watching CBC wouldn't give anyone that impression because CBC likes to celebrate failure and not success.

I expecially like to turn on the tube and watch the Red Green show or Coronation Street when Olympic events are taking place. Red Green over Women's Figure Skating? Only on CBC.

The CBC continues to make the arguement for ceasing to support government broadcasting.
