Putin is a petty man, these woman are mids 20s and 2 years for a 30 second song seems the mid evil ages. I thought Russia was changed since the USSR was broken up. Nyet, read about what Putin and the Kremlin does to anyone who stands in Putin way and its off to jail on trumped up charges.

Most evil overlords would have just had them quietly shot. The Chinese Government would have sent a bill to their families for the cost of the bullets used to execute them. In that context, Putin really isn't such a bad guy for an evil overlord, maybe even the "Mr. Rogers" of his class of villain.
Are you fukking kidding? tell that to all the journalist and reporters who have been killed or the guy in london that was given the radio active cocktail and glowed his way to the coffin.
Sure he ain't Hitler or Stalin but not mr. rogers ....

If you're going to shake the tree you have to be willing to be hit in the had by some falling cocoanuts.

Pussy Riot knew the system, knew what they were doing and their stunt was treated a lot more seriously than they expected.

Oops. Tough shit, but they knew who they were playing with.

I have a feeling their sentence has nothing to do with Putin, but rather with the sensitivity of the new-found religious freedom, that had been suppressed for 70 years in Russia. Maybe, the Russians still have something that is called "sense of decency" when it comes to the sanctity of churches.

Not trying to take sides, just wanted to show the other side of the coin.
It has everything to do with him, because it was a protest specifically about him.

I'm pretty sure that if it was reversed, and some religous fanatics staged a protest stunt at an organization they didn't like (such as an abortion clinic for example), they would not be getting 2 years of jail time. If their law is applied selectively depending on the tastes of the current plotical order, then it is political.

Now Russia is suing Madonna for 10 million for offending them because she supported gay rights during her concert in Saint Petersburg. Jeez worlds most sensitive country? I am offended by their offense.

I have to agree with this sentiment.....those gals knew exactly what they were doing and the also knew
the government would react harshly...2 years in jail may seem harsh by todays standards but if
this had happened when Stalin was alive and running the show those gals would consider themselves
lucky to be sent to a Siberian goulag though most likely they would have been hauled off to the
basement of the Lubyanka and tortured untill the confessed and then shot in the back of the head with the
distinct possiblity of the same thing happening to their families.

To those that think Putin is evil do a bit of research on Stalin.....hell he had more of his own people
killed or sent to labour camps both before WW2 and after it than Hitler did with his "final solution"

While you're quoting percentages and statistics.......
Putin’s Chechnya Turnout: 107 Percent

Allegations of fraud abound in Russia’s recent election, but Chechnya is perhaps the most brazen case. Chechnya, the region that Vladimir Putin practically declared war on in 1999, voted for him by an astonishing number—by more votes, in fact, than there are people on the rolls. In one precinct Putin got 1,482 votes, while his communist opposition got one. There are only 1,389 people registered to vote there, giving the precinct a turnout of 107 percent. Russian forces detained hundreds of protesters during demonstrations yesterday. More than 20,000 people came out to call for Putin's ouster.

As far as I am concerned, they are guilty of trying to become rich and famous by being outrageous. It worked for Madonna, didn't work for them. Tough luck:)

I am sure they would not be welcome in a Vancouver church doing what they were doing in Russia. Having watched their "act" I think they deserve, if not 2 years in prison, at least a good kick in the butt. We here in Canada would call it art, the Russians have the courage to call it what it is: hooliganism

hooliganism

Noun
1. willful wanton and malicious destruction of the property of others
(synonym) vandalism, malicious mischief
(hypernym) mischief, mischief-making, mischievousness, deviltry, devilry, devilment, rascality, roguery, roguishness, shenanigan

Yours was the only intelligent analysis here, and frankly you're dead-on with regard to the issue. I'd like to add further that the western media and the sheep that blindly follow it predictably use incidents like these to cry afoul of human rights. You even get pseudo-intellectuals like peaceguy who use fancy words like "non-sequitur" to only simply be stating that something doesn't make sense (to him) just because it doesn't seem to follow.

At least one of them is out already. I foresee the other two girls to be out way sooner than expected. Russia and their strongman can't afford to screw up their huge investment for Sochi. Can't afford to have bad PR before the Games. They gotta keep Madonna happy. ;)
