As an independent contractor . in the housing bueiss. i have found out that . everyone that employs me should find out if i have WCB. or they may become liable for the premium on my wages or all the medical and rehab expenses. if i am injured on the job. or even possibly on the way to the job. Because B.C. medical services will not cover any injury related to payed work or on the job Or for that fact any injury related to a car accident.. So it looks like everyone working has to be covered by WCB for there on good. I know a friend that i work with has a privet insurance . but that turns out does not relieve the home owner . or contractor that highers me from. any medical liability and they still can be billed for WCB fees. if I am injured.
I never new!
Now I wounder if the lady's may have to have WCB . for work related injuries.
it seem lie the government .. has us all buy the ball with our social system..
I am not say there is any thing wrong .. it just that there is a lot of duplicity agencies. where one would do.. just give them all your information .. and they just charge you one fee. or tax.. and it covers you from the cradle to the grave . for car accident , job accident. home and leisure accident. and pays you when you are off.. Why have all these different . agencies.
UIC,WCB,ICBC, CPP, Welfare. and afew more.. when they have our number .. and we are not going any where.

Good points Maxx. WCB is a form of insurance for employers. If a worker gets injured he can't sue the employer.

So if you hire a contractor to do work for you and he get injured and has WCB you're ok. If he doesn't then he (or his family) can sue you and your home liability will possibly cover you but your rates will surely go up.

If you hire a contractor ask for his wcb number and ask him to give you a letter from WCB stating that he is in good standing.

If you want to hire casual help, or if your contractor doesn't have WCB, then you can get a number for yourself. Its quite easy and there is no charge to get coverage. You pay on the basis of your payroll. The only glitch here is that you will need to be familiar with the regulations pertaining to the job - you are the employer. But its a small price to pay to have protection.

WCB rates are determined by how many accidents happen in each industry. I wonder how many claims are put in by MPs.Should be interesting reading the form 7

Yes each type of biz is rated or class according to claims record. ie: home building is rated at a higher rating then say a dentist office. A rating of 11 means that you (employer) will pay $11 per $100 of payroll. So if you pay your employees gross $50,000 per month your WCB bill is $5500 per month,

Anyone that owns a business knows this. As a customer, I'd be an idiot to hire that doesn't have this coverage.

It's my 2nd question when hiring contractors....the first question is....who is your liability insurance coverage with.

And....I insist on proof. Anyone that hires anyone without insurance or WCB is looking to get it up the chute :)
