Hello everyone - What with the tough economic/employment times dragging on, and living in an expensive part of the country, I've had
the idea that perhaps an old idea has come full circle and would thrive in this environment. Food co-ops! Back in the seventies I recall,
although somewhat vaguely, our house belonging to a co-op down in the 6th and Ontario area - the name escapes me - and am
wondering if there is anyone out there who has more and clearer knowledge of the inner workings of this and other organizations. If you
do, please PM me, or post on here if you wish.
Thanks.

It seems that this is the closest thing you'll get to a 'food co-op' these days; maybe the idea needs some energy to get it going again? Meanwhile, community gardens are popping up everywhere. I guess that's the in-thing right now!

Also, these guys are open to the public on Saturday mornings, so you might just wanna gather a group of friends for a weekly shopping excursion:

And don't forget the Farmers Markets, but don't expect low prices. I paid $8/pound for heirloom tomatoes and they were worth it!

Happy food shopping!

I just stay away from chain supermarkets. There are a lot of smaller types of businesses, like produce only places here and there with better prices for a variety of things. I don't like one stop shopping, I prefer going to different stores for different things. Depends on where you live. Commercial drive is great for that kind of shopping, but there are also other neighbourhoods that cater to that as well.

on yer ignore list
back in the day there were only corner retail stores and supermarkets so the idea of food coops was an easy thing to put in practice

now we have big box stores whose prices are danged hard to beat

checked out walmarts food prices lately? not many food coops can organize their affairs to beat those kinds of prices
