Search won't let me look for "flu", so apologies if this was already done.

H1N1 is making a comeback, apparently, and the community here would be ripe for respiratory illnesses.

How many here get the flu shot? Is it likely any Asian providers would?

I got one years ago (and got the flu), but never since.

We have a nurse come to our office building each year, its free and non mandatory (but everyone gets one). Just do it on coffee break. I think I have had 7-8 years in a row. Haven't had the flu in that time even once.
Prior to that I would get the flu every couple years.

Never have and never will.

I got my first cold in 7 years in December, otherwise I have been quite healthy. I am a firm believer in your own autoimmune system requires a certain amount of germs and viruses to build up an immunity against all other sorts of viruses. Everyone I know who gets the shot does get sick shortly afterwards.

The pharmaceutical companies have a sweet heart deal with all the health regions whereby all employees get the shot or be forced to wear a mask. Personally, I would choose a Darth Vader mask

every time I've had flu shots- I ended up getting the flu. No thanks. I'f you care for your health by being relatively fit and eating right, there is no need for the flu shot because your immune systems is strong. Anything that your gov't wants you to do badly has to be questioned.

Haven't had shots of any kind for years....a sniffle here and there nothing serious. Kept bees and when I first started, I used to get some vicious stings, but I was healthier. Then I learned how to avoid being stung, managed my exposure. No bees anymore but I'll take a couple of trips a year to Doc. Bee in Pitt Meadows, or John out in Surrey, anybody that has bees and get stung a few times. Never felt better.

I get one every year, have done so ever since I was a young teacher, working in the petri dish that is a public school. I have no desire to be Typhoid Mary, my lungs can't withstand a serious respiratory illness, and the two days of side effects were minimal, compared to the 4 weeks of missed opportunities that result from an outstanding case of bronchitis...

I'm still torn about this.

"They" are now saying we're seeing more H1N1 cases in BC, but my doctor said I should do whatever I think is best for me. He recommends it, but doesn't think it is the miracle its being made out to be. He said being vigilant about washing hands, being aware when you hear people coughing and sneezing n public and avoiding inhalation near them is just as effective as getting the shot and being sloppy and unaware. In other words, it's another quick fix for most people.

I also can't help thinking the drug company profits are behind the big push more than any other factor.

I'm sure that a colder climate is difficult for most humans to tolerate; makes me wonder if they have less flu in tropical places? Nevertheless, I wonder if being more conscious during our healthy times will help us prevent sickness? What do y'all think?

Working in health care and with youth you must get flu shot every year, I get one every year, I have no choice as I do this part time. I have had the flu once but it was during the summer. I do not think it hurts whether you get one or not. I believe a lot of it is staying healthy eating right and taking care of yourself.

I honestly would rather not have a flu shot, as yes I am a big baby when it comes to needles and the ache in your arm for a few days afterwards is so annoying.
I saw some in news stories that were sprayed into the nose.

Anyone had one of those, or are they all needles to the arm?

I remember my arm ached for days and I could barely move it after the one I got years ago.

I would check with your pharmacy! I had it this year, and I had mild soreness in my arm. I believe my parents told me that they had the nasal spray version.

I am pretty sure the nasal spray version is given to kids only, but anybody please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the general info in Alberta. I would think the same would apply to other parts of Canada as well.
http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/Diseases/hi-dis-flu-influenza-vaccine-information-sheet.pdf

Who should get influenza vaccine?
All Albertans 6 months and older should receive influenza vaccine. Influenza vaccine is especially important for people who are at a higher risk of developing complications from influenza. It is also important to immunize people who are able to spread influenza to those who are at high risk of influenza-related complications such as health care providers and other caregivers.

What influenza vaccines are available in Alberta?
There are two types of influenza vaccine available in Alberta: an inactivated (killed) injectable vaccine and a live nasal spray vaccine.

Which influenza vaccine should I receive?
Healthy children 2 to 17 years of age will be offered live nasal spray vaccine. Children 2 to 17 years of age with stable non-severe asthma or certain chronic health conditions will also be offered live nasal spray vaccine. This vaccine gives the best protection against influenza in this age group. People 18 to 59 years of age who are healthy may also be able to get live nasal spray vaccine; check with your health care provider to see if it is available.

In very rare cases, live influenza vaccine viruses can spread from person to person. They are not likely to cause illness; however, it is recommended that people who receive live influenza vaccine avoid contact with anyone who has a severely weakened immune system for two weeks following immunization.
Children 6 months to 2 years of age, children with severe asthma, children on aspirin or aspirin containing therapy, people with weak immune systems, people 18 years of age and older and pregnant women will be offered the inactivated injectable vaccine.

I think your question, by singling out Asian providers is very racist so I'm not gonna dignify it with a response. Why would you ask about Asians in specific, as if they're the only ones that make other people sick?

Also I'm pretty sure H1N1 is mostly a problem in Alberta right now if I read the news correctly.

:fear: Wow! I have to agree with allhorsesaresamecolour about the racist bit? Whats that all about? The shit that gets said here is hilarious lol

I don't do flu shots, never have. I don't see a problem with us getting sick, it's our bodies talking. Plus, isn't it a form of new world order, like optimum points!!! ;)

Holy fuck some people want to go overboard trying to be PC.

I specifically mentioned Asian providers for three reasons -

1 - AMP's are high profile and we recognize them as being a specific arm of the industry.

2 - most AMP's are high volume, therefore they meet more people than many or most other providers on this board.

3. - Many Asian providers are in country for short periods of time and speak limited or no English they may not be aware of the local flu situation/availability of shots/need for such/ requests by authorities/ etc.

If I have a desire to fuck an Asian lady, put my cock in an Asian lady's mouth or lick her, how would that translate to being racist against her?

Haha sorry to have frustrated you but seriously the way you worded it sounded bad, you have to agree. I'm from Toronto and lived trough SARS. I saw a lot of asians be ostracized through the whole thing, maybe I'm sensitive to that. Thanks for explaining

H1N1/09 is the virus that is making the rounds. It broke out in 09, and it was a pandemic (meaning it was a brand new strain of virus). It made a lot of people sick, but it killed comparatively few people compared to other virus strains. It is not a pandemic anymore, because most people have an immunity to it. Most victims had complications like COPD, and Asthma, and were very young, or very old.

Influenza attacks the lower respiratory tract. It prefers a temperature of 37 degrees to happily replicate. It will hit you suddenly, it rarely causes vomiting, except in children, it causes major aches and pains, and fever. Fever is the first symptom (although you may feel tired and chilled before that hits) You may get a dry hacking cough.

Rhinovirus (common cold) is a virus that inhabits the upper respiratory tract: nose, ears, eyes, throat. It will survive in temperatures between 32 to 35 degrees...that's why it stays in your head...head cold. It does not like acid environments (drink hot lemon) it does not like elevated, or very low temperatures. (Steam your face). Symptoms begin slowly and include stuffy nose, swollen eyes, sore throat, productive cough with lots of phlegm. You will feel run down, but not as exhausted as with the influenza virus.

Symptoms between the two, Rhinovirus and Influenza, can seem similar, so a really, really bad cold may feel like influenza, and a mild case of influenza might seem like a common cold.

all this information is easily obtained through the health nurse, or your doctor. These viruses spread opportunistically when people are herded together in groups...school, holiday celebrations, summer camps etc...and take advantage of lower standards of hygiene (influenza can stick to a doorknob for quite a while) weather does not seem to affect, or inhibit, their ability to spread.

The human body does not create viruses, but it does produce fevers, and phlegm in an attempt to fry and flood the little buggers out of the body.

I was very offended by your post. Yes Canada is a multicultural and very PC country so you have to be careful here. If you're not happy with this you can move to the conservative districts in the US where saying things like this is not frowned upon as much.
