Can anyone explain the appeal of the single explosive firework?

I get the attraction to bright colours and designs like roman candles, but what is the deal with just booming explosions?

All week these have been going off with the only purpose I can see being to scare children and pets and terrorize anyone who has been in combat or comes from an area where explosions take a deadly toll and stress people out.

I have friends from Vietnam, Iran and Ireland who still freak out when they hear these things. My dog is terrified, too. Why do explosions entertain some people?

I am not a big fan of loud noises myself. And the fireworks never seem to last much longer than 10-15 minutes. then you pack up your stuff and go.

But I am pretty certain they do NOT sell fireworks in Ontario for Halloween, so I think it is a west coast thing!

I hear you. What I'd like to know is why people in Vancouver (BC? not sure where else..) do this as a Halloween thing? No one did this in Montreal. I just don't get it. It's so stupid. Who came up with that nonsense and decided it was a Halloween thing to do?

My dog freaks out when she hears fireworks. They don't terrify her but she starts barking like crazy. It's the only thing that makes her bark like that and I can't stop her. Last Saturday some retards were firing them for at least 15 minutes at 2am.... and she barked the ENTIRE time.

It is such a stupid ass 'custom' (or whatever). People! Firecrackers have nothing to do with Halloween so wtf.

lol but man, is it ever annoying. :p

oops hadn't seen this part. You're right, it is a west coast thing. (A really stupid west coast thing!)
I bet you're the type of person that would move near an airport and complain about the noise.

Maybe it's a cultural demographic thing. Fireworks and light are celebratory items among many of the dominant cultures in this part of the world. I may be wrong and if so stand corrected. But it could be a reason.
Personally my people just eat pasta and great food and drink wine when we celebrate.
Mmmmm grappa that'll make a man out of you. The women too! LOL

As a kid, we used to blow things up at Halloween. Blowing things up was fun. Yes, it is a little annoying now that I am older, but I can see the attraction to kids blowing things up. Halloween is as good an excuse as any, being a naughty exploration of our darker sides. Also on the west coast, we like to blow things up generally, much like how we enjoy whining about politicians and provinces east of us. Making things go boom is kindoff like violence in hockey. We need a release of energy so that we can remain a kind and gentle society. Lots of chineese and indians out here too, and they like to make/buy/sell firecrackers and support things that go boom boom. Don't like boom boom, go live in PEI.

Use to be awesome back in the 70's, when you could still get firecrackers! We were even allowed to take them to elementary school:thumb: The teachers said we couldn't set them off on school property though :-(How politically incorrect is that?)Totally different time though, we never wore seatbelts, walked too school without our parents,if you were up to no good, your neighbours squeeled on you.
I remember back home there use to be a big bon fire on the beach on Halloween and there'd be a big fireworks show..... Good times!

Actually, I've lived on the West Coast my entire life, and yes, we've always had fireworks here for Halloween, but I believe it's actually an AMERICAN thing that we've unfortunately picked up, like saying "Uh-huh" as a response to "Thank you".

As for the noisy crash bang boom every night for 2 weeks? Out here in Peyton Place...err I mean Clayton Heights, there isn't a lot of that. However, when I lived in North Delta and Diwali and Halloween overlapped, it was vicious. My poor dog was so terrified of them that he crawled up onto my lap and beside the monitor on my desk and shivered...

He's a 65+ pound Rotti cross...

What's the connection? How did I 'choose' this? And at least the airport would have a purpose ;) And would not be loud at 2am in the morning because (at least as far as the airport in Dorval/Montreal goes), planes can't land/take off between certain hours...because of the residents.

But I still don't see how that's in any way relevant to stupid firecrackers for a whole week because of Halloween.

Well, there you have it. Vancouver and Nova Scotia. Still no explanation about where it comes from or how it started.

In Ireland (both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland), during the Halloween season, there are many fireworks displays. The largest are in the cities of Belfast, Derry and Dublin. In 2010, the Halloween fireworks display in Derry captivated an audience of over 20,000 people. The sale of fireworks is strongly restricted in the Republic of Ireland, though many illegal fireworks are sold throughout October or smuggled over the Northern Ireland border...

Both fireworks and firecrackers are a popular tradition during Halloween in Nova Scotia and Vancouver, although apparently this is not the custom elsewhere in Canada.

The two known firework displays used during All Hallows' Eve in the United States are the annual "Happy Hallowishes" show at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party" event, which began in 2005, and the "Halloween Screams" at Disneyland Park, which began on September 25, 2009.

Fireworks are........AMAZING!!!

They go boom! boom! BOOOMMMM!!!! Who doesn't love that???

I hear fireworks are the best used when they're going off outside when having a session with an SP ;) Cause when there's fireworks inside and outside of the session it can be an amazing time! Maybe we should hold our own PERB gathering....BBQ, wine social and fireworks in the evening!

It's origins tie into Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. Very close in time of year, and they set off fireworks for that. We used to be mainly British here (other than the Natives), and Chinese to build the railroads. who we know fireworks are a big part of their culture.
And it is a West Coast thing, so if you don't like it, feel free to move back to Montreal, Toronto, or PEI.
And not too many years ago, it would have started in late September and lasted until the weekend after Halloween, so consider yourselves lucky!

actually new brunswick celebrates with fireworks too - don't know why

in central america the country folk start blasting off fireworks on some holy day in late september, it builds up to a crescendo on the day of los muertos (our hallowe'en) then dies down to a steady roar through to the start of advent (26 days before christmas) when it ramps up considerably, then it builds steadily until an all out inferno from chistmas and the week through new years!

i always thought if they put all that nitrate into fertilizers they'd be the breadbasket of the new world, instead of the basket cases of the new world

I think it has something to do with being a retarded idiot. They like load noises and breaking things.
