everying morning i am woken up by some moronic fax machine trying to send some crap to my phone.

#1. i don't have a fax machine.

#2. i have tried *69 and the message tells me that 'that number is not available by the *69 thingy'.

so, short of signing up for the 'block that number' service, is there any other way to stop this crap???

go buy a fax machine and see what they want, then tell 'em you not interested.

In a nice wet pussy!
I have a fax machine and, in the past, received a lot of useless calls like the ones you speak of. Most were for clothing, jewelry or services. They originated out of Surrey - 588 numbers with multiple extensions.

The senders are required by law to list a number on the fax that recipients can call to request cancellation of future faxes. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't - I had the feeling that if one called, they figured, "Hey, this guy's got a fax machine", and they'd try selling you something else, from another extension, to get around Telus' regulations. These faxes are automated by the way, and are sent from a PC, so they can be quite persistent.

Eventually, the faxes stopped, probably due to a lot of complaints from others - Telus is supposed to react to these. So the only recourse you have at this point would be to plug in a fax machine, so determine who the caller is, and fax or call them back.

Very annoying indeed; I now only turn my machine upon request. Your only other option, may be to get a new number.

LG,

Connect your machine to a phone line and use the Windows Fax to receive faxes. This way you don't need to buy a fax machine.

Once you get a number of whoever is sending it to you, slam them back. If they are sending them during the night, inundate them in the day with a message saying to stop bugging you.

Usually someone will call you to ask you to stop. Turn around is fair play. Maybe imature but satisfying.

Yes, I use Cheyenne Bitware to recieve faxes to my PC. I can then decide if I want to print it or deleate it.

I also slammed them back with BIG BOLD letters in a Word file. Sent 50 faxes to one company once and wasted their ink and paper. Works like a charm.

I believe Cheyenne is free software.

for the technically challenged does this mean i have to leave the computer on all night?

do i have to have the fax-ware running?

can i collect faxes through the high-speed adsl connection?

Yes.
Yes.
Not sure, I just re-route my phone line through my PC.

okay ... here's the current situation: have phone line running into computer with faxware running ... now the problem: the faxware wants to answer the phone before the answering machine ... if i let it ring through to the answering machine then the faxware won't answer the fax attempts.

now what?

most fax machines are put 'in-line' before the phone but recognize that it isn't a fax and 'roll-over' to the phone again ...
