Literally and figuratively are miss-used frequently. In conversation one hears that sone one uses literal as an intensifier instead of to man the opposite of figuratively. I will use a crude example; I literally pissed my self laughing! Maybe I did, maybe I didn't, you can tell from the wet spot!

mmmm... a 'target-rich environment!'

in order of appearance:

miss-used = misused
sone one = someone
literal = literally
man = mean
my self = myself

i think i got them all - did i miss any? :)

Words and phrases that are frequently misused/misspelled on the boards (and elsewhere) that drive you bananas (if you are a shameless grammar nazi like myself!)
I'll go first!
'Hobbiest' - Incorrect.
'Hobbyist' - Correct.

'Your' - A possessive pronoun as apposed to..
'You're' - A contraction of 'you are'.

The objective here is not to slight anyone, just to have a little fun and bring a different facet of 'education' to the board :)
Admittedly, perb is currently among my primary reading sources and I am probably not alone there.
So why not, yeah?

Ok, your turn!
Language is fluid and dynamic. Yesterdays misuse or misspelling is tomorrows proper form.

If you doubt it, try reading some English literature from the twelfth or thirteen century. Or even the original King James Bible :)

Yes, it is functional. My point is that you probably figure out something out even is someone makes a slight grammatical error. I have typed your instead of you're. I know the proper usage but sometimes in my haste of responding to an urgent email while trying to resolve 2 other issues I make a mistake. I would rather read a document with a few minor grammatical errors that a perfectly written one that says nothing. I have received responses to RFPs with lovely prose and beautiful graphics but the actual content was crap.

also, "irregardless" is not a word, but is seen from time to time.

Oh! I know! I KNOW!!!!!

Mixing up THEN and THAN...One being a comparison, the other denoting a point in the past...
In my opinion, the use of upper case letters and multiple exclamation marks to emphasize a point is the most irritating crime against the English language. Not to mention lazy. If that's the only way you can get your point across don't bother.

There's always Google and Wikipedia.
you clearly do not understand the concept of effective communication. if you expect that somebody will have to use google or wikipedia to figure out what you meant, then you have failed to communicate your point... epic fail as a matter of fact

Well, kinky_guy, maybe you are just a little bit too kinky.

Maybe your RFP's include requests for activities that the lovely pros, who display some beautiful graphics of tits and ass, are not willing to offer, hence their content seem crap.

You know, most of us just look at their ads, and phone the number noted. ------ No RFPs needed....:D.:)

I hope this link works....

This strip is perfect!
What gets me is not the spelling mistakes or grammatical errors in the posts, but the responses to such "infractions" that are directed strictly towards these "errors", rather than responses to the post or OP. I like to think of this as a review board first, with all of the insightful, factual, entertaining, silly, derogatory, humourous etc. etc. etc. posts that go along with it. If all one has to contribute is a continual "they're" vs. "their" diatribe then save it. Most of us are not interested. Just sayin'! :)

So why are you bothering to read and reply to this thread, then? It's fairly clearly labelled as a thread for people who take an interest in grammar, spelling, and stuff like that. Why waste your time with it?

Because there is a difference between "taking an interest in" and "nit-picking" over spelling issues. My point was that many members simply focus on grammar issues, with no actual contribution to the thread, rather than the content or intent of the post/review itself. That should also be quite clear.

Yes - I imagine it is somewhat irksome when a poster jumps in on a thread that was penned with a specific objective in mind and deviates from the subject matter of the OP ;)

I agree with ddcanz that worrying about things such as use of "there" or "their" is a waste of energy.

There is one perbite whose spelling is,well, erratic, but he is understandable in what he writes.

I am referring to threads other than this one which is all about the quirks, foibles and oddities of English.

It can make the difference between landing a job or having your prospective employer think that you're an idiot. So yeah, nothing to worry about...
