Bahahahaha!
Literally, thank you.
I think I quite literally needed that.
Note the correct usage at the beginning of the video: "Politicians literally misusing the word "literally".

Here is another for you: Newscasters Misidentifying Photographs As Selfies - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

I don't understand why this one is such a universal problem.

It's = it is. It works the same as he's she's
its = belonging to it. Works the same as his hers ours theirs

Should just add a "T" and it wouldn't be a problem for anybody.

Non-countable vs. countable nouns

If you can count it (1 coin 2 coins 3 coins) it's fewer. If not, it's less. In other words; FEWER coins but LESS money. See? EAsy!
but if i count my coins (1 nickel, 2 nickels, 3 nickels) and i count badger's coins (1 toonie, 2 toonies, 3 toonies), my LESSER coins also equal LESS money

:D

In Your Wildest Dreams!
Just a few days ago, a very reputable SP was kind enough to point out when I misspelled discreet as discrete. (I appreciate it too.) Although correct way would be to pm.

Ironically, next day, she was trying to correct someone when he/she spelled definitely as defiantely. She herself spelled it as definately!! Well, I didn't miss the chance to point her mistake out and.... ... poof .. her post disappeared. I guess we don't take criticism very well eh?

So yea. we all are somewhat guilty of making spelling mistakes ourselves (and pointing out others').

:)
You're mistaken. I did not delete my post and I owned my typos. A typo is not the same as using a homophone incorrectly. I see that particular error DOZENS of times every day in texts from clients, in reviews, and in other women's ads CONSTANTLY. I was not correcting YOU per se. I was bringing attention to the sort of error to which Heidi alluded in starting this thread.

I take criticism quite well. Passive aggressive behaviour, on the other hand, makes me nuts. Personally, I would have been less offended by this post if you HAD just gone ahead and said "Ha! Ya know, it's funny...the other day there was an incidence of this type with Ms Erica, who we all know is a dedicated GRAMMAR WHORE by her own admission...;

Snarkily sniping about my kindness in correcting you and then pointing out my error, on the other hand, just makes you seem like (and please, bear in mind this is only my opinion)...well...kind of a jerk, quite frankly!

Well do you know what to do when a Grammar Whore protests too much? You take her in your strong manly arms and whisper gently in her ear, "There, They're, Their...." :eyebrows:
Funny. Nicely done.

Actually, I was just trying to be wise. It's improper to end a sentence with a preposition, which was my original post's grave error...

I'm surprised no one corrected me. But mind you, the proper way would be annoying;

"At what is this post trying to get?"

[Remove head from ass]
Not an actual grammar rule, as many people think. It was a convention introduced by the same puritan whose name was given to his versions of popular dramas, novels, etc with all the smut removed! (Bowdler, I believe...) There is nothing incorrect about ending sentences with prepositions, and the refusal to do so is an affectation up with which I do not put....

Whose Melissa and why are you and Rhonda so anxious to go to Home Depot?
And why can't Rhonda ask her?
Why do you need to do all the work?
What's her problem anyway?
Fuck you Rhonda! Get to Home Depot yourself!
C'mon Melissa, let's go grab a beer and a shower.

(I also have a problem with context and continuity.)
lol Lazy Rhonda...

Is this thread going the way of Jack, his Uncle, and horse?

It took me a while to figure out, but I think I've got it:

This is what he meant:
Poor grammar is like nails on a chalkboard. The use of "that" instead of "who" makes the subject seem less of a person. "That" is a thing you are talking about. A person is not a thing.

If poor grammar is like nails on a chalkboard, lack of clarity is like pulling your hair out.

S
Please don't pull my hair out! (sometimes one must give in to the limitations of using one's iphone for comments)

I think everyone will get the point of not using "that" all the time ... people are people.

Words and phrases that are frequently misused/misspelled on the boards (and elsewhere) that drive you bananas (if you are a shameless grammar nazi like myself!)
I'll go first!
'Hobbiest' - Incorrect.
'Hobbyist' - Correct.

'Your' - A possessive pronoun as apposed to..
'You're' - A contraction of 'you are'.

The objective here is not to slight anyone, just to have a little fun and bring a different facet of 'education' to the board :)
Admittedly, perb is currently among my primary reading sources and I am probably not alone there.
So why not, yeah?

Ok, your turn!
I hope this link works....

Oh, it works! And I adore Dilbert comics!
I often use them as teaching material for my seventh grade ESL students :)

Though as far as I am aware, the proper usage of standard English is a purely functional mechanism and not one of aesthetic or appearance, no?
