Hellraiser. Could have been so much better, but still disturbed the hell out of me. The Exorcist, snuck into the theater, when I was 12. Scared the crap out of me, and I have been seeking that level of thrill, ever since.

I love Hitchcock films! I have a huge “vertigo” poster featured prominently in my place.
Hitchcock was THE master at suspense. I saw the Birds when I was a young teen at our little town's theater, a matinee as I recall. The scene where the guy had his eyes pecked out damn near caused me to have recurring psychotic episodes. Also saw Psycho, I think earlier and I was younger and it did not do what the Birds did. (no music - just the sound of the birds).
And as a corollary to that, if any of you have ever experienced and gotten the bee jeebies from the Still Creek Crows (look it up), and were freaked out by the Birds ... well all I can say as far as movie making, THAT is what being a master is all about.

Quite possibly the best horror movie I've seen:

any sources. (June 2018)
Shallow Ground is a 2004 horror film written and directed by Sheldon Wilson and starring Timothy V. Murphy, Stan Kirsch, Lindsey Stoddart, Patty McCormack, and Rocky Marquette. A naked teenage boy (Rocky Marquette) appears at a soon-to-be abandoned sheriff's station, drenched in blood, on the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of a local girl that remains unsolved. Sheriff Jack Shepherd (Timothy V. Murphy) searches for the boy's true identity and intentions, while dealing with his guilt over failing to save the girl and solve her disappearance.

I used to sneak behind the sofa when episodes of Dr. Who came on the TV, so my vote goes for Shaun of the Dead!!

  • High Tension - intense French slasher movie.
  • Us - Jordan Peele’s brilliant horror movie.
  • Let the Right One In - crafty Swedish vampire movie.
  • Heredity - slow build up into creepy intense horror.
  • The Shining. Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece.
  • The Exorcist. Only reason I went to bible camp.
  • The Vanishing. The Dutch version not the American one.

I am not a fan at all of Horror films. That being said, Tim Burtons 1988 horror comedy, Beetlejuice is one of my ATFs,

" It's Showtime "

Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman, the movie scarred me for life. The scene where he's getting tortured by the nazi doctor put the same fear of dentists as Jaws did for sharks. Far more plausible than a nutcase with a hockey mask and chainsaw.

Phantasm -- that movie was on TV seemingly all the time late on a Friday or Satuday when I was a kid. Totally freaked me out.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is more creepy than full-on scary, but it's just as unsettling as any horror flick I've ever seen.
