Favorite Vegas Hotel

So i'm in the middle of planning my retirement vacation in august to VEGAS, and was wondering what everyone's top choice for the best hotel is.
I am looking for something close to the strip and close to most attractions.
I was thinking of the stratosphere or the MGM. If you have been and can help me out with some ideas that would be great!!

Thanks in advance. :)

Hotels I've stayed at

The Tower at Caesars, from the elevator you walk straight out to the pool. First rate rooms. recommend :p

The MGM, rooms are standard but nice. Love those Majestic Lions. will repeat:)

The Excalibur, rooms are old and not nice. will not repeat:(

The Aladdin, rooms are ok but plain. will not repeat:(

The Mirage, nice rooms and pool. will repeat.:)

New York New York, standard rooms. will repeat if the price was right.:)

Tropicana, old rooms and smells they can't get out. will not repeat.:(

The Stratosphere is too far from the main hotels and not in the best part of town.

Bellagio? I'll find out in June. :D

The Stratosphere is a dump and too far away from everything.

The MGM is nice, but my personal fav is the Venetian.

Can't go wrong with Bellagio - unless you are unlucky at the tables

My Vegas favourites

The Bellagio - still the gold standard

Wynn Las Vegas - really nice, but not quite up to Bellagio.... so far

MGM Skylofts - awesome experience, expensive, but awesome

The Mirage - precursor to the Bellagio - still very nice

Treasure Island - brother to the Mirage, but a little tired with age

Paris Las Vegas - nice, but nothing outstanding

Caesar's Palace - new tower (Augustus) is very nice, but the older ones are very plain - service was abominable

Emerald Suites at Nellis - very convenient to the racetrack (Las Vegas Motor Speedway), authentic redneck bar at front of property, lots of shady characters hang around the parking lot, but no murders on the site in the past year

Hard to go wrong with the top choices, but be prepared to pay serious bucks for serious quality - but if you can do it, then you'll have a fabulous time

PS: The "European" pools (topless) at Wynn and Caesar's are really great - view(s), amenities and facilities

I was n Las Vegas in Febuary and stayed two days at the Wynn and two days at the Venezia Tower at the Venetian.

The Venezia tower has several concierge floors and it is the nicest place I have ever stayed. They are so gracious and the suites are quite spacious with great views of the strip. Every thing feels and looks quite rich.

The Wynn was very well appointed and I enjoyed the Plasma TV and great view from my suite but the hotel itself does not possess the old world greatness of the Venetian or the Bellagio.

My fave is Caesar's palace - especially the new tower.

Still can't beat the Tropicana best pool in Vegas although its starting to show its age and they'll probably knock it down this year the $20 trick always works for a room upgrade for me.
Hard Rock has a great pool too but you have to have a high tolerance for poseur jerks.
Spent a night at the Bellagio didn't have a problem with the room rate very high end accomodations but $25 minimum blackjack seemed a bit much but I guess its designed to keep scumbags like me from staying there.
If you're looking for cheap the Sahara is the way to go nice clean rooms for $40 a night great pool and always a young good looking crowd unlike Mandalay Bay which when I was there had the world's largest gathering of fat non milfs in the US around its wave pool.

That's funny I was at both the Hard Rock and The Tropicanna. The Hard Rock has jus been sold, so there will be major changes, and the Tropicanna will be imploded no doubt by the end of this year or sometime next year, mark my word.

It was at the Trop that I had the session with the mother/daughter team. I tried the $20 trick at the front desk for a room upgrade but got a room with a broken safe and a non working bath, so they put me in a room with a mirror on the ceiling.

The Hard Rock was much better that was in 2001 (pre 9-11) and I had a pool view room, now they are almost imposible to get, and very very expensive, so forgitaboutit.

Your best deal is on Fremont Street, stay at the 4 Queens, afordable and right in the middle of the action.

Bon Chance

PS Stay away from the Buffet at Circus Circus ;-)

The 2 most underrated hotels are the palms, and the hardrock. They are both off the strip, but if you are between 21-35 they are the best hotels to stay at.

Can you explain this "trick"? I go to Vegas quite often and never heard of this.

One of my favourites is the Monte Carlo. Nice Rooms.

BTW Stratosphere... You know there are rides on the roof. One of them is the slingshot. Well you can here the stupid thing in your room. Worst room I ever had in Vegas. Up until 7am at the tables. Head to the room for some much needed sleep. Get woken up by that stupid ride. Left the hotel soon thereafter.

If you go in August, look for the one with the best AC.

I was there once in August and the temp was 116. Not sure how that translates into Canadian, but pretty hot.
116 Fahrenheit translates to 47 Celsius

$20 paid discreetly to the person who checks you in can sometimes get you a better room.
Most of the time I just ask and they will give you something better in Las Vegas. Now Mexico; ie Playa Del Carmen etc, $20 will get you the best available at no extra charge!

Luxor

The Luxor is nice a hotel to go visit but not necessary to stay. The rooms facing the interior get a lot of noice from the large lobby. It is also one of the smokiest hotels.

what about the Luxor, I hear their pool area is quite good?
The 4 Queens doesn't have a pool, butwhat I did was I had a suite with a love tub, and a fridge, so I filled the tub with cold water and had my own private pool,I had cold drinks in the fridge, so I could just reach over and grab one, and watch Home Improvement in style. :D
