Two men died in a suscpicious blaze this morning at the Aquarius Men's Bath in the 400 block of Notre Dame Avenue.

Notre Dame between Harriet and Gertie streets is closed while Winnipeg police and the arson squad investigates.

The fire began about 7 a.m. on the second floor of the two-storey building, which includes an upstairs suite. One man was found dead at the scene, and the other was conveyed to hospital in critical condition and died shortly after.

"It's being considered suspicious," said a police spokesman.

Early damage estimates are $300,000 to the building and $200,000 to contents. The fire was contained to the second floor.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Winnipeg police and the arson squad are investigating.

CJOB is reporting that the fire happened around 7 am. Thank god you're ok! My sympathies to the two men who died.

"2 men are dead after fire ripped through a Winnipeg building this morning.

The blaze was in a building called 'Aquarius Men's Bath' at 457 Notre Dame Ave.
Police and Fire Officials say the fire erupted around 7 a.m.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second died in hospital.
It's believed the facility is a Winnipeg Men's bathhouse.

Police say the arson squad has been called in.
The area around the 400 block of Notre Dame Avenue is expected to be closed for much of the day."

Unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened to this establishment. (Aquarius existed on Alexander and King in the 90's and was a victim of arson and the place literally burned to the ground in 1999.) The person who did it at the time was someone who had claimed to have contracted AIDS there years before and committed suicide soon after if I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully they can take care of this and catch whoever did it.

What a horrible tragedy. I didn't know anyone involved, but as always it saddens us all to see good people die too young. As an outsider, it just seems nice how the vast majority of people from all over have put politics and prejudices aside and just shown concern for the families of the victims here. Hopefully lessons will be learned from this and even though it is of little solace to those who are mourning the dead, the tiny shred of daylight may be that others may be saved in the future because people will be more careful in these situations from now on. I know personally, in the past fire safety wouldn't have been something that crossed my mind if I had entered a place like this. Now, it would be.

Manslaughter charges laid in bathhouse fire

Last Updated: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 | 1:19 PM CT

CBC News

The Oct. 11 fire at the Aquarius Bath House in Winnipeg killed two men, Steven Yablonski, 23, and Robert Clark, 62. A 25-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged in connection with a bathhouse fire that killed two men earlier this month.

Justin James Rosdobutko was arrested Tuesday night at a Winnipeg business and is in police custody. He has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, police said Wednesday.

Steven Yablonski, 23, of Winnipeg and Robert Clark, 62, of Saskatchewan, died of smoke inhalation in the Oct. 11 blaze at Aquarius Bath House on Notre Dame Avenue in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said it doesn't appear the two men who died were targeted and there is also no indication the fire — which was called arson by police on Oct. 20 — was a hate crime.

Michalyshen said Rosdobutko was at the bathhouse with a companion the morning of the fire but that other person has not been charged.

The fire broke out at 7 a.m. on the second floor of the 12,000-square-foot facility. It caused about $500,000 in damage to the building and its contents, fire officials have said.
