I know, Rox darlin'...Many people do though. Many of the people I met in my former profession, educated professionals who should have known better (in fact, in some cases were being PAID to know better) acted as though depression and anxiety were moral failings.

Whenever I went through injustice and discrimination I'd always tell myself, "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." Also, some people are jerks. :D

A Self Determined Body

This thread keeps going ...

With enough resources (time, money, knowledge and a community of care) an individual is capable of anything. The thing is ... those resources aren't distributed equally.

Some here will read that and think "bullshit". I hope those with the "bullshit" reaction can accept that's the mind creating their individual reality.

Complex issues get bogged down by individual positions which can be transformed by art.

Heather Cassils is an artist who uses the physical body as sculptural mass with which to rupture societal norms. Drawing on conceptualism, feminism, body art, gay male aesthetics, and Hollywood cinema, Cassils creates a visual language that is at once emotionally striking and conceptually incisive. Bashing through binaries, Cassils performs trans not as something about crossing from one sex to another, but rather as a continual becoming, a process oriented way of being that works in a space of indeterminacy, spasm and slipperiness. Forging a series of powerfully trained bodies for different performantive and formal purposes, it is with sweat, blood and sinew that Cassils constructs a visual critique and discourse around physical and gender ideologies and histories.
Here is a video related to her recent work Cuts: A Traditional Sculpture, explores and pushes the limits of the mortal body.

This HuffPo piece by Cassils is packed with assumption altering detail.

If reading isn't your thing - check out Cassils' LadyFace/ManBody and see her self determined results. For example:

The thread has lots of evidence, testimony and opinion. It's a great reference for body image politics. Thank you all.
