Cleveland Steamer

Wow, watching FAMILY GUY tonight and this gets mentioned! How far can these shows go without getting busted. I guess the FCC has no idea what a "Cleveland Steamer" is.

Premise:
Peter is trying to make extra money so he dresses up like a hooker on the corner. Lois (Peter's wife pulls up, and he proceeds to ask what she's looking for ... "perhaps I could interest you in a Cleveland Steamer?" he says. Just as the talking dog is about to explain what this is - LE pulls up, and Peter starts giving Lois directions.

So funny, that show continues to blow me away!

family guy

That episode blew me away tonight. I haven't laughed that hard in AGES. Stewie remarking to meg afterwards "Kind of like seeing into the future isn't it?" was the icing on the cake!

I was wondering what a Cleveland Steamer was when I heard that. That's one of those instances where you don't know which is more depraved, the act itself or the fact that there's a phrase for it.

the show wasn't cancelled because of poor ratings but rather their constant jabs at various races and religions; the Jewish being their favorite target. In fact, the episode that was the final straw was one in which Peter is desperate to find a jewish accountant to help him with his finances. He even sings a tearful song about it: "I need a Jew" . It's hilarious stuff but the network took a pounding from several religious and special interest groups. No one was safe from their satirical wit. I think it's way better than "The Simpsons" but I'm sure I would get some opposition on that.

It's kind of stupid to pull it because of derogitory remarks, anyone ever see old reruns of SAnford & son,or All in the Family? That was years before Family guy,and they got away with a lot more racial jokes.

sad, isn't it? All in the Family would never make it to air nowadays. Every episode had a reference to the "cikes" or the "colors". I'm a white male of mixed backgrounds but no discernable heritage or religion, at least none that I know of so it's easy for me to wonder how some could be so offended but I'm not in their shoes. I would like to think that it's all done with good intentions and for the sake of a funny but more and more people are quick to cry "foul" now than they did twenty-thirty odd years ago. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when Family Guy returns that it's as edgy and controversial as before.

Stewie is voiced by Seth McFarlane, creator of the show. He does tons of the regular voices including Peter and Stewie. I'm a huge fan as well and can't wait for the new episodes. If I had found this avatar before I signed up my posting name would be Mort Goldman. That guy just kills me. Though from what I hear, you won't be seeing him beside my posts for much longer.

nowayjose, I believe it's Neil Goldman, not Mort, but you're right, he's funny. I love Quagmire too - he's always on the make. I'm sure he's a pooner.

It is ironic that Peter, the overweight, white, dimbulb, lower middle class factory working stooge is whom the most fun is being poked at but because he makes a joke about Jewish or African Americans on almost every episode that is what the FCC idiots focus on, instead of the brilliant satirical wit that is displayed every night and which makes me pee a little bit in my pants every time I watch. Oh well, if the new episodes don't make it past the censors, I still have the full DVD set.

How can a show like that get cancelled but a piece of shit like "Will and Grace" or "Friends" goes on and on?
I have seen the Family Guy several times, but I am happy to say that I have never seen an episode of Will and Grace and only 1 episode of Friends (when Jean Claude Damme was on).

TV sitcoms, especially those made by the major networks have really sucked in the last 10 years or so. There is too much fear of pissin' off the advertisor and of political correctness from the left AND the right.

IMHO, one of the best ever shows was Married with Children. The only thing they took seriously was being not serious about what they did or said.

And yet a show like All in the Family is needed more than ever. All the netowrk execs have to do is look at the success the phoney news programs are having. People want sarcasm, they want controversy and when these are done with quality then a show will be very successful.

The alternative is the banal those born-again christian special interest groups are trying to shove down our throats.

Humour

My son (18) has been brilliant in informing me of shows like the Family Guy since we came over from the UK. The BBC had its own version of All in the Family called 'Til Death Do Us Part. The lead character Alf Garnett (played by Jewish actor Warren Mitchell) would lead off about wogs, nignogs, coons, yids, lefties...in fact anyone who was not conservative and supported West Ham! At the time, the comments were the same as we are seeing now. In hindsight the show is credited with helping bring bigotry out in the open.

A UK show that got completely killed by the 'PC police' in the US was the BBC's original version of Coupling. BritComs on Tuesday are showing 'Two Pints of Larger' a significantly less fluffy version of Friends
