Exchanged cable modem today. Now have 5MB down and 1 MB up. Plus 50 gigs of bandwidth to play with per 30 day period. Extra 15 a month. Faster than business dsl and 100 bucks cheaper. About 5 times faster than normal high speed internet from Shaw. Speed difference is noticable.

same provider, shaw, old modem started with N (lol). new modem motorolla. Exchanged old modem for new, no charge.

Example of speed difference.

Just downloaded the first discs of two games, each disk approx 700 megs. Download time was 3 hours. Instead of 8.

When I first got shaw internet two years ago, I had the option to purchase or rent. I purchased, and the modem brand was Terayon. Ok, so it didn't start with an N, but I knew there was an N in there somewhere.

The shaw agent on the phone said this modem has some sort of phone hookup that allows you to talk long distance for free. Some sort of Primus longdistance package. Anyone have more details on this?

monkey see monkey do!!

Somethings the computer is just no good at, or not ready for. Poo-poo on me if you want but I say the computer is no good at:

Faxing. If you do alot I say get a stand alone fax machine.

Address book. By the time I boot the friggen computer up to check a # I could have already looked it up in my little black book and be talking to that person on the phone.

Being a Telephone. Maybe for long didtance, but not for calling my friend two blocks away to tell him don't forget to bring *blah, blah, blah* when he comes over.

With that siad I bagged an Extreme edition router too. Kicked the Teryan to the curb and in with the Motorola. Cool, 1 month free and 50 gig ul/dl limit.

I heard alot of the Extreme package better compression. Since most o my data is already compressed and encrypted would it make that much of a difference?

Has anyone done testing with already compressed data or purely random data?

I'm not sure if you'd consider .tar a compressed data format, but I've been dl'ing Van Helsing for the last hour, so far have received 476MB of the 2.3 Gig file.

I used to have both the Telus ADSL (2.5mbs) and thel old(er) Shaw internet service. I bought the Shaw internet modem from them when the price came down to $30 last Fall and exchanged it for the new one (no charge) when I upgraded to Shaw's new high speed service (5mbs).

The bandwidth is adequate for my heavy-duty use (streaming real-time data), with 4 computers on the same pipe.

I am thinking about moving my 2nd line from Telus to Primus VoIP ($19.95/month).

If I can get rid of my Telus fax-to-email service ($7.95/month) I will be totally happy.

See the speed is only good for raw downloading from web sites where you can go as fast as their server can dish it out.

For surfing on PERB and the other forums/sites I bum around on I notice no real difference.

For things like Emule, they cap your dl speed so even if I had a T3 line I wouldn't get much faster than 20kbps.

With that said no doubt it is fast when your doing stupid shit like downloading short movies ppl post and windows updates, etc..... I'll re post in 30 days time as to whether or not this whole thing is worth 65 clams a month to me or not.

hitrack,

Check out Shaw's bundled prices. I am paying $107.58 (before taxes) for cable, movies, Asian channel and the Xtreme internet service. $65 sounds high to me.

Where does it say 50GB Per month? Did not see that anywhere
on that link.

Please if anyone has confirmed this let me know
I phoned and asked. I have been suspended in the past for exceeding my download/upload usage, once having 35 gigs down and 32.5 gigs up within a 30 day period. So when I was talking to the guy on the phone about the extreme package, he mentioned the 50 gig within 30 day period. Its not 50 gigs per month, but 50 gigs within the last 30 days of use.

As far as the benefits of using this package, all I can say is 500 plus megabytes per hour, awesome. Thankyou for Troy, NFS underground, UT2k4, a ton of porn, Hellboy, Punisher, COD, and many other files. Going to have to scale down for a few days, or I'll be kicked off after a week. Damn, I wonder if I can pay extra for another 50 gigs? lol

I went to the secure shaw site to check my usage for the last few days. There was no record of it. So, rather than get kicked off again for over usage, I called shaw up and asked what my usage was at. They explained that the tracking program had not been calibrated for cable extreme, and until it is, that usage bandwidth is pretty much unlimited.
