I always did want to be a "Double Naught Spy."

I actually couldn't believe my stroke of good luck when I added things up. It couldn't have been more obvious.
I don't know whether she is really that stupid to do it when there is only her to blame or if she thought I was that stupid to have not eventually noticed and figured out it was her.
Oh well, she's gone.
Now I need to go through some resumes and find a new employee.

BUSTED!
She was fired immediately without notice (as is my legal right in MB.) and I told her that she needs to repay me every cent by no later than 5 pm on Friday or I will be calling the cops.
She was very teary eyed and apoligetic but I have no sympathy for a thief.

(PS, Too bad she wasn't better looking. Maybe we could have settled her debt with a few BJ's. )

That could be a problem. If you have offered her an out that doesn't involve the cops, unless..........then the cops generally won't touch it. Had the same type of situation to deal with, when the person didn't square up the cops were called and that was their response. By making the offer to let her make good, you've turned it into a civil matter, not criminal.

Only way to retrieve your money now is through small claims court. You just wrote off any chance of getting your $$ back. Cops won't touch this one is my opinion too.

Like uncleg said, you should have made an action plan for a repayment from with her. Now it will cost you more getting her into small claims court than it is worth.

Oh well, the money is secondary. I can make $610.00 in my sleep.
It's the principle of the matter and finding out who is stealing from me.
It's the satisfaction of looking the guilty party in the eye and letting them know, I know they're a thief. And telling them to give me their key and get the fuck out. (Which BTW I checked with the MB Labour Standards Branch and I have every right to do in the case of theft.)
Besides she's likely not smart enough to know that she might be able to skip on the repayment and if she does, like I said, it's not so much about the money as the fact she thought that she could get away with stealing from me.

That that's the case in BC too. Firing with cause can be immediate. Without adequate cause can set up the employer for wrongful dismissal.

Since you documented all the way through this mess, she doesn't have a leg to stand on and can't come back looking for severance etc. With her termination slip I believe there is a box that you can comment that theft was involved. It's been a long time since I had one on my desk to sign

You are so right. I was actually dreading the thought it might be her. She has been with me for 5 years but in the job for close to 18. Without her there is no way the place could run and I'd likely have to sell or close. Infact if it was her I might have had to be less unforgiving and try and work things out (with appropriate control measures in place of course).

Got an email from the culprit late today. Asked if instead of her having to come in and repay me if I could just "dock" her next paycheque. I checked with Employment Standards. They said this would be fine as long as she was in agreement and I had documentation (an email is fine) to back it up just in case she later complained to them I hadn't paid her. Today was payroll, so I contacted our payroll company and it is taken care of.

Theif caught and fired.:clap2:
Money recovered.:thumb:

Now it's time for a scotch. Maybe I'll go get a BJ to celebrate.:eyebrows:

Good work, Jethro. You were calm about the whole thing, and you got actual proof instead of blindly making accusations. I've been on the receiving end of an employer like that, and it's not fun...
