Although I completely agree, I think it's best to think of such supplies as insurance against loss or severe decrease in income.

Valuable info Alinburnaby, thank you for sharing that. Personally, I have three emergency backpacks. Each one is filled with enough essentials to last me 5 days in the event of some disaster. One backpack is kept in the hallway closet and the other two are in the trunks of the two cars I drive most often.
most freezers run on electricity. i don't know how many hours per day they have to run to keep the whole freezzer-load frozen, but I don't think the average person will have a large amount of generator fuel on hand to keep it running that often... just sayin'
