Was this thread about golf or baseball? I'm sure Jackie Robinson would have a thing or two to say about the latter. There is a strength and athleticism that is not apparent on the surface if one just watches golf. Imagine playing hockey where the length and curve of your stick changed with every shot, not too mention the ice conditions? I also find it interesting how many of our "athletic hockey players" prefer to golf in the off season. Come to think of it, didn't Michael Jordan have a short lived apprenticeship as a professional golfer? Golf is one of the few activities that a group of people between the ages of 10 and 90 can do simultaneously, while enjoying a beautiful summer day. For this reason I love golf, as a game of skill I HATE IT!!!!!

Apparently Johngenx you haven't seen the physique of some major league baseball players. Case in point: pitcher David Wells. Oh and I remember hearing about a guy named Babe Ruth who is one of the greatest home run hitters of all time.

As for your comments about golf being sexist and elitist, it happens to be the fastest growing participation SPORT in the world. Many a time I go out on a weekday and see just as many woman golfing as men. Also anybody from any walk of life can play. The public courses in Edmonton are very reasonable. Not all of us strive to be members of the Edmonton Country Club. It's also a great way for couples to go out and spend some quality time together. To me it seems your comments are unfounded and unwarrented. :(

johngenx has a point here....and he doesn't.

Golf is absolutely a sport, especially the cart-less variety, which requires flexibility, stamina, strength, coordination, not to mention strategic planning skills, patience, and a sense of humour.

Although golf has had its issues, to blanket it with a "sexist, racist, and elitest" label is unfair. Name one major professional sport that isn't, to some extent, one or all three of those things.

The elitest thing, however, is unfortunately partially true. With the incredible surge in popularity of golf over the last decade, courses are now in high demand, which has driven up green fees to the point where a decent round of golf can be a major expense. Ditto for golf equipment and clothing. But no more so than, say, hockey, right?

I LOVE golf. It's challenging, and a great way to spend a few hours with friends.

Good comments digger although I disagree somewhat on the costs. The Edmonton municipal courses are very reasonably priced and if you're able to go out on weekdays there are numerous discount books or coupons in the papers that drastically bring the price down.
As for equipment & clothing it's usally a one time expense. I used the same clubs for 20 years before upgrading to the new technology. Ask any parent who has kids in minor hockey about the costs of changing equipment every other year not to mention the cost of running the roads and waking up at 6 in the morning.

Golf also teaches discipline, fairness, honesty and promotes self confidence. Name me one other sport where the participants call penaltys on themselves. Also last I looked, I didn't see anyone cold cocking their golf partner with a blind side punch to the head. That's unless you were watching Happy Gilmore. :D

If you lose your balls you can easily get more.
You can wash your balls in public.

Hey Ashley. You need a caddy? I'll volunteer. :) One thing though. If you hit the ball in the bush, you gotta help me look for it. ;)
I am always willing to help a fellow perb member find his balls

How about the PERB Invitational??

Wouldn't it be great if there were a Perb golf tournament?? Texas scramble .... steaks, beans and beer after ... helping Lauren with her putting .... oh yeah, that would be cool!!

Actually, I can think of several girls who would look GREAT in golf shorts!! ( or whatever shorts they decided to wear )

Golf is the ultimate game because other than few moments of brilliance its impossible to master or dominate, one can only become a slave to it.

I'm thinking I need golf lessons (really), Ashley, do you know anyone who teaches?

All sexism, elitism, and racism aside I'm with Ashley. (though I have yet to "be" with Ashley...;o)
Phil's long awaited foray into winning a major was the best last round of a Masters in years. While I normally prefer to play rather than watch, I was riveted to the tube all day Sunday.
I was so tense at the end of the tournament, I had to go for a massage...;o)
See my review of Cindy, at Swedish Touch.
