OK, I've never tried to convert a movie on DVD to an mpeg or avi file, but I'm considering taking my fairly extensive collection of DVD porn (probably about 50 DVDs or so), and putting it all on a hard drive.

Can somebody please help out a noob and give me an idea about what this might entail? What software would I need? Ho wmuch of a royal pain in the arse would it be? Should I just forget the whole idea?

Depending upon the computer you're using to do the conversion it wouldn't be a pain...just an extremely LONG process! You're probably better to buy the largest hardrive you can find and rip them in full quality onto it! 300 gig hardrive for $115......can't be beat!

AVI files are extremely huge. I recently ripped a 45 min movie from DV tape and the resulting file was 10GB. Converting to mpeg is necessary if you want to store any number of them which is a very time consuming process but will reduce the size by a factor of 20 or 30.

An alternative might be to find a DVD jukebox. A friend had a CD jukebox that could hold and catalogue 300 cds. Here is what was available on amazon:

Agreed with those that said this is a fukkin long process. Like start one before you goto bed and 50 nights later you'll be done all 50 pr0n movies.

I usually use a program called Fair use wizzard.

My process is fairly drawn out, but I'm not that smart with this stuff and this works for me.

I first use DVD Decrypter to make a VOB file on my computer. I then use AutoGK to turn it into a nice little avi file.

This response is the closest to being the right one for what you want to do. Except that I see no reason for you turn it into an avi file once you've got it stored on a hard drive, which from what I read in the original post is all that you want to do. With DVD Decrypter, you can simply decrypt the DVD as is to your hard drive. And unless your computer is very old and slow, it won't take hours to do either. I've never had to wait longer than 25 minutes to decrypt a 4 gig DVD. Then a software player will be able to "Play DVD from folder" and you can watch it on your computer. The biggest problem that I can see for you is that DVD Decrypter is no longer supported and I don't know how hard it is to find anymore. Personally, I've been very happy with it. But I'm sure there are other similar programs out there. You should do a little reading at either doom9 forums or videohelp.com -- I'm sure that'll point you in the right direction.

Oh, the other thing about this question that's been mentioned is how much hard drive space you'll need for 50 DVDs. That'll depend on whether they're single layered or dual layered. If they were all dual layered and maxed out memory wise, you'd be looking at about 8.5 gigs per title. So, that 500 gig hard drive would be just about right!

I hope that helps.

Hmm, I think I'll give this a shot. I actually already have DVD Decrypter on my computer - I've just never used it!

Yeah, I need to get a new hard drive before doing this anyway, and I was thinking of getting one in the 300 gig - 500 gig range. I guess it's "go big or go home!"

Thanks everyone!

call me crazy but IMO if you already own the DVD and just want a copy on your computer the usual 700 meg to 1.5 gig, the usual size you download movies in is more than good enough. Kinda brutal to have each movie been 4-8 gigs each, espicially friggen pornos. I really think you should divX the .vob files to shrink them down.
