'Dumb Starbucks' Opens Up In Los Angeles

A new "Starbucks" has opened up in Los Angeles. Ordinarily, that wouldn't be news, but this isn't an ordinary Starbucks -- it's plain old dumb.

In Los Angeles neighborhood Los Feliz, a coffee shop named "Dumb Starbucks" opened over the weekend. Everything is a mirror image of the regular Starbucks, except the two aren't affiliated.

How did they get away with the concept without being sued? Parody law.

According to their FAQ, which was posted on Forbes, “Although we are a fully functioning coffee shop, for legal reasons Dumb Starbucks needs to be categorized as a work of parody art. So, in the eyes of the law, our 'coffee shop' is actually an art gallery and the 'coffee' you’re buying is considered the art. But that’s for our lawyers to worry about. All you need to do is enjoy our delicious coffee!”

"Dumb Starbucks" looks like the real thing, has the same logo and even sells the same drinks as the real thing, only with the word "dumb" placed in front -- a loophole which they believe protects them from legal issues under parody law, CBS Los Angeles notes. The real Starbucks told KCAL9′s Cristy Fajardo that the company was looking into the situation

According to one patron, the lines to get into the "Dumb" coffee shop are up to an hour long -- and the coffee isn't nearly as good as the real thing. "This is pretty awful,” an unnamed patron told KCAL9 of their latte.

LOL I love it, but I don't consider Starbucks as dumb as their customers who prefer to pay outrageous prices for a cuppa java. I much prefer the Canadian Redneck cup o' coffee from Tim Hortons.

I'm an espresso type of girl and Starbucks espresso is far superior to Timmys.

They cannot. Legally it is not a coffee shop. It is art. Parody Art. The coffee they sell the the art.

I will keep on top of the story, though.
that's for a court to decide, not the shop's publicist... just sayin' :)

All due respect VBC, Starbucks has successfully sued companies for having the same coloured awning as theirs.

They may argue "art" but lawyers, court costs and dragging this on for two three years of litigation will make what they think is a funny parody a friken nightmare. Dumb dumb move messing with a World Wide Corporation.

BTW Milano Coffee for the WIN. Support your local Small Roasters who know how to roast beans and not some conglomerates who "Wet Roast" their beans. Slow dry roast is the only acceptable method of roasting coffee beens and making a good blend whether it be for an espresso maker or drip etc.

Yep,

Like the the bartender in "Boondock Saints" might say, lawyers are like assholes & Starbucks has a lot of them.

Take that however you will....
It's just like opinions and assholes, right? Everyone has one.

I guess people forget when Starbucks lawyers. They tried to Shut down the coffee shop in Masset named YoungBucks. In Masset where no starbucks locations exist or will ever exist. It had a green canopy and used similar lettering to starbucks. They were handed a cease an desist letter from starbucks.

Last I heard the ownership didn't fight it in court but changed the canopy color and changed the font and symbols used to differentiate it from Starbucks

Dumb starbucks is not a parody. Nothing about it is a parody for the sake of art. They are making money as a business Even the inference that some how parody legislation can allow copyrighted material to be used in business is absoluetly ludicrous. Just wait for Dumb McDonalds,Dumb coke, dumb apple or dumb google to show up and see how soon the official law gets changed in favor of the major corporations.
This is in fact a parody, by one of the best- Canada's own Nathan Fielder. He has a show on Comedy Central called 'Nathan for You' which does these sorts of things. If you were familiar with his work you'd know he's absolutely intelligent and incredibly funny. I personally find his show to be one of the best show concepts on TV. It's not for everybody, but it's parody at it's finest. Some people don't see the humour in these sorts of things, but I sure do. It is certainly not a 'profit making' venture, but rather a well conceived idea to gain publicity (mission accomplished) and have fun pissing off a large corporation. This is not his first foray into this type of thing so I highly doubt he's afraid of the intimidating team of Starbucks lawyers as some seem to believe. Nathan knows exactly what he's doing here.

Just by putting dumb infront of something doesn't make it parody.

Pretty sure this is what he was going for.

Which? I'd guess that the closest fit would be #8, to imitate poorly or feebly; travesty.
From what he highlighted in his post, he was referencing #8 as well.

But really. The place is closed. They got their footage, it made the news and we are talking about it here so it looks as though to me they got what they wanted!
The comedy show got there stuff and now the place is closed down.
